The Get Back/Relate The Readings

Another week, another blog. But I must give Dr. Homan a hand because he\’s been taking it light on us lately, he knew we had that paper to do last week. Thanks.
First of all, I read all my comments and everyone basically had the same response. I need to focus on one thing. I must have misunderstood the assignment so let me straighten that up now. In my project I know I touched alot of important topics but the one topic that I do believe that I can be most helpful with is the spreading of imformation about the war. I figure that one thing can help me uncover and bring facts to people about a number of different things, such as the death rate in war alone and the abuse of people.
To Brittany Pierce: Your comment was unlike the rest, your question was I believe how was my project going to benefit the class. Well here\’s your answer, Our projects is supposed to be something WE believe is a problem in Society that WE can do something to help. WE meaning I. For example, I read someone\’s blog in they were talking about pregnancy, I expect you would say the same thing. That is what they personally feel they can help so I hope you can get the understanding that this problem is what I personally believe I can help.
The reading that we have read so far don\’t really benefit my project but they do inform me that the same thing that is going on today, such as I stated in my project was going on then. It was basically just an earlier time period. I must say that about half of the reading so far was very interesting and gained my attention as I read the body of them.
These are facts that Dr. Dixon has stated we can do about these problems:
Toughen penalties against all those making profits from drug trade. While it is true enforcement against producers and traffickers has only a marginal effect on total availability, it is important that a powerful message is sent out from every government in the world tat drug profiteering is an internal crime that will be severely punished. This also reinforces a prevention message. Every time the media respond to another seizure of cocaine, heroin or LSD it remains the public perception that involvement in the drug business is a crime of which almost the whole world disapproves. Fortunately, there is close agreements these principles in almost all countries.
Further investment in intelligence/ arrests.
Border controls are the weakest form of law enforcement on drug traffickers because the volumes of goods are now so overwhelming. The future lies in highly sophisticated intelligence gathering and this surveillance, infiltration and sting operations where government agencies run groups who look to buy amounts of drugs and capture whole networks. These operations by definition will invade privacy and freedoms, but are essential if the war against drugs is to be waged as effectively as possible.
Further international co-operation.
Drugs operations at present are severely hampered by lack of international co-operation. One reason as in every other area of intelligence work, is trust. Even within nations different agencies are often ex-reluctant to work together. As a result operation after operation is all but destroyed. The aim is always to observe and follow, leading to the interception as late as possible so an entire drugs ring can be smashed and discovered. All to often trigger-happy police forces have got wind of the deal and swooped in, either in France of Britain. Their reward was high profile publicity from a big haul, but at the same time their haste blew even years of undercover work, and may even have exposed an agent on the inside.
Then there is inter-agencies competition. Intense rivalry damages drug operations. Agencies are too slow to ask for help. An example might be a surveillance operation run by a drugs squad, which is upwards into a highly complex operation requiring ten times as many observers. Instead of calling in the intelligence services, the chiefs decide to make arrest, and boost their own success ratings. All these need sorting out urgently. Leak-proof co-operations is vital at every level. Crop destruction also requires international co-operation, between producing nations and nations which the intelligence including satellite data, the equipment, personnel and the funding to deal with it.
Schools and parents.
Spending on drugs prevention in school is one of the most effective things a government can do. After there is no other place in society where you can have a captive and well organized audience. Only so to college and adults are notoriously difficult to reach en masse with face to face prevention programma teenage years are the risk years so schools programs also get the most intensive efforts where they are urgently needed the emphasis on use of illegal drugs in schools must be broadened to deal more fully with alcohol. It separate educational approach- more available, widely used by parents, legal over 18, widely advert big sport.
Schools need to take a tough anti- drug stance, making it absolutely clear in their prospectus informs parents and children choosing that school are choosing one with a strong line on drugs. Schools need to spell out clearly what this means: absolutely ban on any illegal drugs in the school grounds especially in dealing. Severe sanctions for pupils bringing drugs onto the premises of turning up in toxic from alcohol or illegal drugs including solvents.
Drug testing should be a random thing in schools these days.
Schools that wish to could go a stage further and create a “drug free zone”, a voluntary contract with parents and teachers. This has already been proposed by some in the United States, where parents and governors agree and with reason being given only to parents of tests taken by their children on a voluntary basis. British independent scholar are already testing pupils they suspect of taking drugs.
Pupils can be given special privileges if they agree to sign up to a drug-free agreement. Part of the decision they agree that hairs can be taking at any time for drug testing, with immediate loss of privileges if the positive (indicating use in the last few weeks of months). Special privileges might include permission to extra school trips for example.
The schools and the students can only do so much, so the parents need to help resolve this problem at home too. Parents also need help in how to tackle these issues at home. With drug testing kits for home use because widely available many parents will need advice on how to handle a situation where a suspicion has been confirmed with test done without the knowledge of consent of the child. Many may argue that unwise to test in such circumstances in the first place. However parents with a wayward twelve year old behaving in a bizarre way may welcome knowing the real reason is marijuana and cocaine. At least the problem can then be tackled. The only alternative in the face of flat denials isn’t bury your head in the same hope the child, if becoming addicted, will ask for help soon enough.
It is very hard for parents who smoke marijuana to talk to their kids about marijuana because the first thing they usually think is, oh mommy and daddy’s doing it so it much be okay. So you must be a good example even if you are not a parent of parent figure. A person should always give encouragement to a person who is on drugs that it isn’t to late to do something about their problem and they should at that point offer help by helping them first hand or getting them help from somebody else. One should discourage smoking activities, the illegal ones of course. So if one observes a person and his or hers behavior and the signs the which is their feedback to a drug response, you can tell. A parent should always keep in touch with the school about their offspring and how are they doing and to be straight up, ask about drugs. Tell them to notify you if they ever suspect something because someone can still help but its better when its early on.
