My Project: Guardian Angels
667 words by daisyotutuloro
I am not sure what it is. Ever since I can remember, my mind has refused to let me be overly concerned with the problems of the world (considering the state this country is in). You see, I think I should do what I can to fix the things wrong in my neighborhood, then the neighborhoods in my state, then the neighborhoods across the country, and then the neighborhoods around the world. What I think is a big problem in the United States of America is hunger. People who are in poverty that don’t have enough to make ends meet, often go hungry.
So since, hunger is a big problem, what shall I do about it? I thought you’d never ask. Okay, here’s the plan. I call it Project Guardian Angels (G.A.).
I will use my awesome skill of persuasion to get businesses to donate non-perishable items. I will send letters to whomever it may concern at various major businesses throughout the city. The letters will be seeking permission to gather food at the places of business from the customers/clients and the employees. Prayerfully, I will receive lots of responses in the affirmative. The letters will be sent out in the middle of February. The pickup for the food will be at time intervals convenient for the businesses. Once the food is collected, it will be sorted and prepared for donation. The food will be given to soup kitchens and homeless shelters around the city. A group of my friends and I will go to volunteer our time at the soup kitchens or shelters. While this phase of G.A. is taking place, another phase is being organized.
I will be sending letters to companies in major cities in every state across the country. Similar letters will be sent to groups of people that are already organized and they will be the liaison for their respective cities. These groups (i.e. Girl Scouts, Key Club, etc.) will be collecting the food. The food that they collect will be given to the hungry in the city and surrounding areas. This phase of the G.A. should be going full blast towards the end of March.
I believe in being aware of what’s going on in the world we live in. This is something that we as college students fail to do. We are taught that we must live for ourselves. A lot of us grow up with the mentalities that as long as we survive, forget the rest of the world. Well I can’t change that pattern of thought, but I might be able to help it. The last phase of Project Guardian Angels for this semester will be to do a grand food and money donation. With the permission of the Athletic Director, at one of the last home games of the season, the admission will be two canned goods or two dollars. The proceeds will go to G.A. They food will be given to those who live in the “projects” or other substandard housing. The money from the game and from generous donators will be divided and sent to the organizations that helped G.A. in the different cities.
At the end of the semester, letters of thanks and appreciations will be sent to all of those that helped me with G.A. The places that received donations will be informed of when the program will resume. The businesses and organizations that made the project possible will receive a certificate of merit for all of their hard work, time, and money.
This is the basic layout for my project. Revisions more than likely will be added in the future. If there are any suggestions or questions or comments, please leave a comment. Hopefully, this project is a respectable one. Those that believe in its power, pray that I will be able to complete this in the allotted amount of time and balance my courseload, my church, and my job. Thanks for reading. Peace.

In everything you do you must crawl before you walk. You understand that statment completely. I can see guardian angels turning into big thing. Annual galas Carnivals,Community Forums etc. The whole nine. I like the idea of Guardian Angels.

You have a good idea here. I think that it would really work if you it was put into play. I nice that you are focusing on our country because instead of foreign countries like other large programs. We have the same problems as anywhere else but we don’t put as much effort into ourselves as we do into helping others.

Hi Daisy,
Guardian Angels sounds like a good plan. Bringing can goods to the game or paying two dollars for a basketball game is a good way to have people help out. I would only suggest that you advertise like flyers, posters etc. the cause for bring canned good or paying two dollars. I think at a game last year you had to bring cannned goods or pay to get in for a program sponsing Hunger/ Homeless. Maybe at the game you make an anouncement about your project and maybe people would like to help you. It’s always good to get other people involved especially our very own Xavierites. Also, try your church their maybe others who would like to donate. Overall, I think your project is good and will make a difference in the community. Good Luck!

I agree with you on the idea that way to many people are going hungry, and I feel that your project has a lot of oppertunities for success. The fact that you say that you are just going to write the companies letters, and they are going to donate food doesn’t seem like it will be that easy. From past projects of this sort, it took alot to contact the people that needed to be contacted for the needed donations. I hope it goes a bit easier for you. The can good idea at the basketball game is aso a good idea and seem that it would raise awareness and food as well for your cause. I didn’t appreciate you saying my idea was tacky! Just Playin. It not well planned out yet, and my idea is just an overall image of something I would like to do.

I like it, buddy. I like the idea that you will start small first. The government is so quick to feed and clothe others before they do anything in their own neighborhoods that are poor with children starving. I volunteered with a Health Students program one year and our year end project was to feed the needy and homeless at shelters. Our goal was to feed nearly 500 people with 1000 can food goods, but at the end with the help of grocery stores and businesses, we accomplished to feed more than a thousand people with over two thousand can food goods. I have all confidence that your project will be a success because there are a lot of people who would love to help.

Hey,:-), Hey, :-), I like your idea. Now, what would you like to have first the good or the bad pointers. I’ll be a good group member and give you the good points. Daisy, hunger is a good topic. And it is definately a problem in the world today because even before I was born there was always feed the hunger commercials. This is also a hard problem to fix. But, it is possible. I noticed that you mentioned that you would give back to the bussiness that assist you in donating to the hunry. Well, why would you want to give some of the money that you raised back to those bussiness that helped you out. I know that you are showing your gratitude, but hopefully they will not accept the money. But, instead you should consider using all of your earned money to go towards the hunry. I think that the bussinesses will understand. Right?

Your project seems very interesting and very thought-out.But even though your plan seems very complete, there are some things you should consider. There is much more to world hunger than what meets the eyes; it is a political issue as well. The government have more than enough money to feed the hungery, but they don’t. Why? I don’t quite know, but i suppose it all goes back to the saying, “the only way the rich stays richer is if the poor stays poor.” If you’re the person who will do something against that, I applaud your efforts.

Daisy:
Your title is very catchy! I love it! A catchy title usually draws alot of attention because people want to know what it is about. Guardian Angels are supossed to look over people and help them and protect them. I think everyone needs a Guardian Angel, but especially those people who have serious problems -like homeless and hungry people. I love your idea Daisy and just seeing you in class , I think the project fits your personality! Keep up the good work!

Hey Daisy,
Thanks for the coment you left on my blog the other day. But you are like the third blog that I read, that addresses world hunger. I can help you with this plan of yours. You can also get together with the other students to make your plans work.

Great idea! At first I was a little dissapointed because you said that you would go to the homesless shelters to give food, I’m thinking, Why? The homesless shelters are both federally and privately funded. Besides that, in New Orleans, not even most poor families will bring their kids to a homeless shelter to eat. I know it’s is sad but a lot of people would reather eat noodles and rice everyday of their earthly lives rather than go to a homeless shelter. Trust me, I know, my family got to live in one for $100 for six months, in that time my mother was able to get back on her feet, so to me it was a good plan. When I hear or see other people struggling, I suggest the shelter and they all think I’m trippin. But anyway, then I read thatwyou were going to deliver them in the projects? You don’t have to go that far, most everyone in there has foodstamps, why don’t you go right into Gertown, touch the hearts of the families that are closest to the school. You might inspire some of the kids to stay in school so they can help impoverished people one day.

Hey Daisy! Your project was very interesting and unique. I like your plan. As far as the basketball games, you have to also consider the university. Xavier University would probably want a profit of G.A. donations. The basketball players do not play for free. Other than that, great work! I love the idea go for it.

I believe that your idea is what we have needed. These commercials are getting money, but not from major businesses like you want to do. If given the opportunity I believe you can really make a difference.

I think that your project has a lot of potential. It was very original for you to address the hunger problem that is occurring right here in New Orleans. It is evident that you could possibly make a change here since you are attending school here in New Orleans. I like the idea about getting the community grocery stores and clothing stores to help out with your project. Most shelters depend on the people in the community to bring their clothes and perishable food items to the shelter, but they never have got the idea to ask the grocery stores and the clothing stores. If they have then I am just misinformed and was not aware of it. Good luck in the progression of your project and I hope that it is successful.
