The Unity Project

One of the biggest problems facing the world today is a lack of unity. This lack of unity is often a result of ignorance. People often do not understand other people’s problems. This can lead to conflict and a general lack of unity. To put and end to the conflicts, people need to understand where others are coming from. If one person understands where another person is coming from, they will be more likely to sympathize with them and less likely to start a conflict with them. For a person to understand where another is coming from, that person has to have knowledge. Therefore through knowledge we can conquer the lack of unity that plagues the world today. I have created a plan that will bring about unity through the spread of knowledge.
In order to spread knowledge, I have decided to either create an organization or join an organization that will positively influence people to accept others. I will actively spread the message of the program to help persuade people to join. Once some people start joining, they will hopefully influence others to join as well. And the farther the message is spread, more people will join. And for every additional person that becomes a part of this organization, there will be that much more unity here on earth. As more and more people join, it will be easier and easier for the message, of accepting others and promoting unity, to spread. And the more the message spreads, the more united the world will be. Eventually after enough people have accepted the message and joined, everyone will be unified and instead of having constant conflict in the world, the world will reach a state of true peace. By true peace I mean to say that everyone will learn how to accept and respect the differences of others.
What kind of organization could take on such a challenge, accepting any and everyone, and teaching them how to respect others? A church would be the perfect place to spread this message. Churches do not shut their doors to people based on their differences. Anyone and everyone, from the man dressed in his brand new Sunday clothes to the man who came off the street in torn up rags, is accepted into a church. Churches do not discriminate against people and this type of organization can not discriminate against people. If this organization discriminated against any person regardless of the reason, it would undermine the very purpose of its own existence. Another good reason for this organization to be associated or part of the church, is because most churches already have other programs running that are designed to help unify peoples and communities. A lot of churches have programs like boy scouts, girl scouts, community awareness groups, and fundraisers that are designed to help unify people (most often of that community around the church) by catering to their needs. For example, if a community hospital near the church was having financial problems, the church might take action to help out the hospital. The church might have some type of fundraiser that helped the hospital stay functional and provide its much needed service to the community. It seems to me that a church essentially is an organization that promotes unity.
Even though there are a plethora of good things that a church brings to the table, at the same time there are a plethora of bad things that a church brings to the table. The first bad thing that comes from the church is maintenance. Churches cost a lot of money to maintain. To have a facility that is large enough to hold enough people that can truly spread the message and get the wheels turning costs money. Members of this organization would have to realize that in order to be able to spread the message of unity to people, it will cost money to ensure that the needed facilities are available. Once a small church gets enough members, the church will have two decisions that both cost money. The church will either spend money to make better use of the space they have and add on to the actual building or the church will spend money on buying new land and creating another church in addition to the one that already exists. It is clear that as more and more people join, it will cost more and more money to ensure that everyone will be able to receive and spread the message.
Another disadvantage to the church is that the church is already divided. There are many different types of churches with many different types of beliefs. It would be difficult to persuade people to join an organization that is very dependent on a church that they do not agree with religiously. In order for an organization that has such a universal goal to spread, it must spread in the already established church structure. Therefore instead of associating the organization with a single church or type of church, the organization needs to be associated with every church. If the organization became a program that spread to every church, it would be easier to spread. So instead of setting up an entire new system that has to spread itself and fund itself, this organization could be one of the many programs that the church already runs. Once enough churches start running this new program and once enough people join the organization and participate in the program, it will spread itself by the simple fact that it exists and people are active in it.
What will this organization literally do? This organization will meet on a regular basis, most likely weekly, and plan ways to go out into the community and promote unity. Through activities like painting murals and gardening or helping maintain public parks, this organization will make its presence known in the community. After the community realizes the positive things that this organization can bring, people will begin to join and help spread the message. The more people that join, the easier it will be to clean, maintain, fix whatever it is that needs to be done to help people in the community. And the more people that join the organization, the bigger the “community” will be. At first the community will just be the area close to the organizations base, but, as people join and support the effort, the organizations “community” will spread and spread to the point where it is bigger than just the community. It will become a network or communities. And the more the message spreads, the bigger the network until eventually the network or community becomes one. The network becomes one because at this point the whole world will be connected by this common goal.

Hi Brandon!
At first you lost me when you went from the unity thing to the church. As I kept reading the more it made sense. Unity is the issue that you want to address and you listed what things you could do to help solve the problem. Then you used the church as an example of how we should unify and work togather. Right? It’s been said that in some churches, some are not accepting of Homosexuals. But in most cases they do accept them. I like the issue you chose to address because unity is the root to solving many of the world’s problems.

What’s Up Brandon,
I just want to say that you have the right idea about unifying the world. That might be the most major we have today because many problems that we face in the world are only because people don’t get alone. Also, I agree with Tegan about the fact that churches don’t accept everyone, so that could be a problem in unifying people. Anyway, I do believe that you have a good idea about how we could unite the world but the church may not be the best way to go in some cases.

Your idea on unity is the first I’ve read but is something that should be addressed first. The lack of unity causes other problems to arise, and makes it harder to fix those problems. If people were more understanding of one another, than less critical of one another; problems among people woul cease and allow everyone to focus on problems as a whole. Unified effort is always better than someone trying to solve thing individually

If you can solve this problem, then there would be ‘world peace’. Lack of unity is the source of most of all the small and big problems. Everything from war to racism to small household crimes are the from disunity. I like your idea of unity through the church. However, atheists, nonbelievers, and people who are against the church(es) are going to be left out of the picture.

Brandon:
You are right! We do have a lack of unity among us. I like your plan, but leave the problems of the church out of your plan for now. Also, are you going to join an organization or form an organization? I think you should form an organization-it would just be more radical! You feel what I am saying. Overall, good job and please pursue your plan!

I can’t help it but to agree with you. Lack of Unity is the the biggest problem among humans. Like the saying united we stand, divided we fall. These words means alot to many people. Look at the countries that has no unity. These countries are all divided and their citizens are every man for themselves. If we can get the whole world to combine unify then may be lif won’t be so bad after all.

You have a good topic, Brandon. Because of the lack of unity, we have several problems like all of us listed on our blogs. People do not understand where other people are coming from because they think theyre always right, which leads to conflicts. You have a very good plan but I did not get one thing. What kind of knowledge are you going to spread during your meetings? What would be your to do list for one meeting. Good luck on your project.

I agree with your topic idea. Unity would solve alot of problems in New Orleans as well as the United States. I think small neighborhoods need to be aware of the fact that there are others out there that want to promote unity. With a little effort I think your plan will work.

Unity is something that the world is lacking, I think it happened when Europeans realized they had a head-up against their comptetion at the time. Going through the churdh is a good idea but I think you should keep in mind that most people in church already know how to behave in a unified manner, usually it’s the heathens that don’t know how to act!

Very clear writing, and good project. Keep us posted about how it proceeds. Never in my life have I felt that I lived in such a divided country.

Hey Brandon Dawkins. I think that your idea is a nice one. The only question that I have for you is this. What will these people be unified for? I see that you want to get an organization together, or join one that promotes unity, but will you guys be unified under religion, professional goals or what. What will all these people have in common. For example, the church like you said, thats an organization unified under god. Many organization during the black power movement where unified under civil rights. The ACE organization is unified under education. What will be the perks of joining your organization? What will you all do besides spread the message of unity? Also, what type of unity do you mean? That is a fairly broad topic. Do you mean unity amongst the afican american community? Old people and young people? People across the world? I think your project will be a whole lot more effective if it were mroe specific. Great Idea and please reply. Chloe

Wow, man yo need to comment on my blog. Anyway, hello, my name is Chavell Scott, your fellow classmate. It seems that you have a good plan and know where to get the help from. By the weay your mentioned discrimination, you should hook up with Ryan Chretien on your project. He’s thinking about bringing a change in discrimination. Anyway, the church is a good option for your project. I believe that the church may even want to give you funds to implement your project overseas. That is only if you are intrested in going that route. But good plan, it seems like it can be prosperous.

When I first read your project I felt as if I had missed the main point about what your project was on. Then I said, oh the project is about lack of unity. I think that your project is very creative and unique. Never would I have thought to do a project about unity. Through all of the projects that everyone has chosen will not come to pass without the unity of a group of people. I know for a fact that I am going to need the assistance of others to help my project get off the ground. I think that by forming groups and by joining group will indeed bring some unity. Good luck on the progress of your project.
