Week 1 Project:
I think that this Intro to Biblical Studies class will be very informative. So far I have seen that the class appears to be interactive with the students and making it a lot more fun and memorable than the average class taken. I hope that I can gain a lot more insight on the Bible and different people’s opinion about it and its teachings. I also hope that I can begin to form my own opinions about the teachings and events in the Bible instead of only what it told to me. I originally took the class only because it was a required course for my major. Now, after seeing the criteria and getting a small taste of what is to come, I am glad that it was required because I do believe it will help me in further developing my own spirituality. I decided on the Intro to Biblical Studies course over the others because I wanted a deeper understanding of what the Bible really meant. I wanted to see how the events and teachings came together and learn more than just what religion was and the different traditions and rules. I felt that this course would be the one that really helped me in my own religion and understanding, which will eventually connect to everything that I do in life as far as major decisions.
My thoughts on the Bible are not very complex because there is a lot written within the Bible that I do not quite understand and a lot of things that appear to be old traditions and superstitions. I would not base my entire life by each word written in the Bible but there are a lot of things within the Bible that have been very inspirational or have gotten me trough a very difficult time in my own life as well as other people who I have known to share the same experience. My background on the Bible is not very extensive. My father grew up in the church, but as a single parent he did not have the time to get my brother and I as involved as he had been. We attended church on Sunday, but that was about it. So my knowledge of the Bible goes as far as what is cited in church sermons. My father felt that it would be good for me to find and develop my own spirituality and thoughts on religion as I got older. This is a very good way for me to learn even more and in a different kind of setting other than a church which sometimes try to persuade people’s thoughts.
My professional goal is to become a pharmacist. I know that spirituality and religion have a lot to do with the medical profession whatever the specific area of study is.. Many people often use the Bible to go against certain medical procedures by quoting and that will definitely have an impact on what I do in my career. I know that many people interpret the quotes in different ways and that not everything is literal because much is lost when translating from one language to the next. This course will hopefully help me to learn how to make those critical decisions when it come to ethics even with people trying to persuade my decision with quotes from the Bible.
I agree and make the commitment to attend every class and be on time (other than an emergency situation). I can be prepared for class and show my preparation by being involved and participating in class. I also make to agreement to have my cell phone turned off so that I do not disrupt the entire class and I as well can give my full attention. I also will come with a positive attitude and an open mind in order to get the most knowledge out of this course. These are not hard commitments. All of the commitments are key to getting the most from the course and I know they will not be a problem for me to keep.
