MY PROJECT
129 words by Sle1
For my big project, I decided to work with Uyen Ho to donate knit works made by us to the West Jeff Medical Center. The knitting and crocheting will be done by us and we hope to convince others to join. Throughout the course we plan to have a bake sale and use that money towards knitting materials. The types of materials we plan to knit are clothing such as baby hats, mittens, blankets, etc. We will also try to visit some schools and with permission possibly teach the children how to knit and crochet for other people. Not only is this project a good way to help the people in the hospital, it’s also a way that kids can learn how to give and help others.

Make sure that your blog entry writing is not the same as Uyen’s. I like your project.

This is a great idea. Hospitals always need items to cheer up their patients. Right now there are not as many organizations around to provide this service. My women’s group has sewn pads for wheelchairs for several years as well as burp pads for newborn babies, and the feedback from the hospitals and patients has been wonderful. With cooler weather around the corner (hopefully), people will really need hats, scarves, mittens, and blankets, particularly the very young children and the elderly, who are so susceptible to illness.
I think the idea of getting children at local schools involved is a good one. In my experience, the children are very enthusiastic about learning crafts and about helping other people. Another idea may be to contact assisted living centers where people have time to knit and crochet. They may be willing to make hats or scarves with donated supplies. Many of these older people already know how to knit.
If you do a bake sale, I will donate something. Just let me know!

Hey this is a very fun and creative idea. I like how you want to donate what you make to others, as well as get others involved. Try to see if you can start this as a program that can continue even after you may not be there to moniter it. So many people do not even have the money for the supplies you want to make, and I know it would be a blessing for them to receive it. We see it as ‘just $5′, someone else may see $5 as their meal for the day. Also, see if you can donate to a homeless shelter as well, if it can be incorporated into your project. I also like the idea of teaching knitting to the kids. Children these days need more culture in their lives, and that is a great idea. Good luck =)

This is a pretty neat idea, knitting for the babies. This project sure comes at the right time, winter season is coming up, you girls must be burning that midnight oil to get those hats, mittens, blankets out for the holiday season =). Did you start the knitting yet? How much knitting are your going to do? Hopefully others will join in on this to give your more help to get those things out for the two big holidays coming up. I can’t help you out on this since I don’t know how to knit myself =). What will you do about the fund for right now? I don’t know about the idea of children and knitting, it sound dangerous. Good luck with the project and do keep us updated.

This is a very creative idea….I didn’t even know people still knit. My mom can knit extremely well; I can probably ask her to help you if you need the help. She works a lot though as she is a pharmacist at East Jefferson General Hospital, but I think she stopped knitting because she had no one to knit for. Anyway, we have all this extra knitting equipment here, and I’m not sure if she wants it anymore or not. Hope I can help your project in some way! I really like your idea, and I hope you knit tons of clothes.

I like the idea of knitting to help others. This will help the hospital by providing them with materials for the babies. Getting children involved is a good idea. I just hope most of them are mature enough to handle the materials. How many schools will you and your partner visit? Getting more people to help will make your project productive.

Wow, very original. It’s a creative idea to donate these hand made blankets. It’s also great that the two of you teamed up together so you will be able to get more accomplished. Your ideas are very thought out especially by wanting to even go to some of the schools to teach them how to knit. I’m sure they’ll enjoy it and their teachers just might continue to do this with their classes every year. The both of you should have tons of fun with this and you might have many people that might come out and help with your project. Hopefully by the end of the semester you might be able to get a good amount finished and you may even continue doing so even after the class is finished. GOOD LUCK!
