Dear Mayor C. Ray Nagin,
My name is Eboni Kaglear. I am a first-year student at Xavier University of Louisiana here in New Orleans. I am a Chemistry/Pre-Pharmacy major working towards earning my Pharm.D. degree so that I can go into a career as a Doctor of Pharmacy. I am currently enrolled in a Theology class, in which I am learning about biblical studies and also required to do a weekly blog. As part of my blog grade, I had to develop an idea for a project that will help improve the world, also incorporating my major. The issue I am addressing in my project is helping people in poverty to be able to pay for prescription drugs. My project consists of me volunteering once a week for four hours in the HealthCare Resources department of Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge, La. People who can not afford medical expenses are referred to HealthCare Resources to be screened for Medicaid. In order to improve the world, I am trying to help increase people’s chances for qualifying for Medicaid. However, I can only do so much. The incomes required to be eligible for Medicaid are extremely low. I am writing you this letter to inquire if there is anything you personally can do to help with my project. Especially since Hurricane Katrina, many people in New Orleans are suffering from poverty. Because of this, they can not afford to pay for medical expenses. Is this issue being addressed already in your office? If not, do you think this is a project you are willing to help with? Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Eboni Kaglear

Many people would benefit if you do choose too. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

If not, is this an issue that you would be willing to put some effort to? Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

As the Medicaid Office of Louisiana, could you be a little more lenient with the guidelines that need to be met in order to qualify for Medicaid? Many people in Louisiana can not afford to pay for medical expenses and they do not qualify for Medicaid. What are these people supposed to do? Everyone is entitled to medical services; that is why they are here. Your response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
I thought these four people, or groups of people, were best suited to change the problem because of their positions. Obviously, the Medicaid Office would be a great place to start since that is the main issue I am addressing. Mayor C. Ray Nagin, President George W. Bush, and future Governor Bobby Jindal all holds positions of power, so I figure they should be able to do something about it. Also, they should want to address the problem because they should have the best intentions for the people in mind.
African American criticism is a useful tool to Bible scholars because people are curious about whether some of the ancient people mentioned in the Bible were African American. One of the main questions posed was if the ancient Egyptians were black or white. A voodoo doll of Queen Nefretiti was made with white skin. Many people questioned this because they believe that she was an African queen. But the king responded that they do not look at race. In fact, we do not start seeing ideas of race until the age of exporation.
