To whom it may concern:
My name is Valencia Johnson and I am a Biology major at Xavier University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana. Through my Theology class I have been ask to take on a project that will change the world. The topic I have chosen and am writing you today is the portrayal of women as sex symbols in advertising and the media. I am writing you this letter on three aspects of your viewing audience as a teen, a woman, and African American.
After watching many of you shows it has come to my attention that your station have no regarded for women body and the women who watch yours station. In more than 30 percent of the advertisement seen on your station it deal with so kind of imperfection of women. The music videos seen on you station show women at their worst. Do you not understand that it is not just adults and teens watching these things but children also? Women have fought for years and years to be consider as equals and with in the matter of three minutes you have set us back. While I do understand it is not you the network who makes the videos but the artist. If you did not show it they would not make those kinds of videos. The artist you the media support completely dehumanizes women and only show them as object. When your station first started you wanted to show it Hip-Hop and R&B at its best. You wanted people to know it cause of its rhymes, it beats, and it soul. Have you forgotten that? Hip-Hop today is all about girls shaking the goods. In nine out of ten 98 percent of hip hop videos there are African American all oiled up shaking their assets with short clothing on and men grabbing all over them making it seem as it is acceptable.
The television show you show put amazing amounts of pressure on woman to sexually attractive. You the media are the ideal for young women of what hot and what is not and how you should look and act. Should you not take some more responsibility in screening what you show?
I do understand that a slogan in you business is Sex Sales but I ask you at what point does it turn to prostitution.
Respectfully yours,
Valencia L. Johnson
This letter was not only sent to B E T but also Vh1 and MTV, because these three station make up the majority of music t.v.
I have not recived a responce back from any of the networks.
How is African American criticism a useful tool to Bible scholars?
African American criticism is important to Biblical studies because it lets people see how Africa and Africans were viewed by the Israelites during their time period. Race was not an issue in ancient times. The ancient Israelites had great respect for Africans. The only place in the world that is really caught up on race and racism is the United States. Ever since slavery that has caused some people to be very prejudice, and because of that prejudice many passages have been either changed or misinterpreted. This problem still exists today.
