Week 6

Well, I’m at “Week 6″!!!! Only 9 more to go!!! Lol!!!. There was not a single problem beginning my project. At least knowing what I would do was not a huge problem. First I decided to go to my alma mater, “Eleanor McMain Magnet School.” I decided to come here first because I thought I would feel more comfortable speaking in a place that I was familiar with. I was very nervous so I needed to consider this in my decision.
It was not a really big deal asking fro permission to speak to the student. Since I know some of the teachers(at least the ones who are still there before the storm) they gladly allowed me to speak in some of their classrooms. Since I was in the school’s marching band, I also knew some of the students. Unfortunately I did not get to speak right away about sexually transmitted diseases to the students. Each teacher told me I had to make permission slips so the students could let their parents know what is going on, and for them to say it was alright for me to discuss sexual diseases with them. Luckily this wasn’t a problem since the next day, all the students brought back their permission slips. After I got that little obstacle out of the way, I TRIED to educate the students on sexually transmitted diseases, lol. The first class I went to was a seventh grade class, so there was some laughing whenever I mentioned the word “sex.” First I asked how many of them knew what the term “STD” MEANT. Most of them raised their hands. Then I asked them what types of sexually transmitted diseases did they know about. The majority of answers I received included “AIDS”, AND “HIV.” A couple of students, said “herpes”, but other than that, there were no other answers.
First, I explained to the students that even though HIV and AIDS are some of the more common STDs, they are obviously not the only ones. I told them that there are many that are not widely known. I also gave each of them a list with some sexually transmitted diseases that are not commonly known by kids. Among them were HPV, gonorrhea, and VD. I explained to them that HPV(human papilloma virus) is a new recently discovered disease that has spread to millions of people. Most of the seventh graders had not even heard of this disease, although some did. I told them many people are carriers of this disease and are not even aware of it. Some who carry the disease are not even aware that it exist. After I gave the the information, they seemed quite shocked at some of the things I had to say. Withe their being so young, I sort of expected this type of juvenile reaction.
After I left the seventh grade class, I went to an upper level classroom. I decided to talk with the eleventh graders. I knew some of the students in this classroom so I was not very nervous since most of the students in this classroom I knew from the marching band. Basically, I just repeated what I had said to the seventh graders, but the eleventh graders did not act as immature. Unlike the seventh graders, they knew about most of the sexually transmitted diseases I talked about, although very few were not informed of some such as HPV. They also didn’t seem surprised when I told them how many Americans are infected with HPV. It seemed as if they expected to hear the information that I was giving them. But when I told them about some of the effects HPV can have, some of them seemed as if they were not informed. For example, one thing I told them about HPV was that it is usually more harmful to women than to men. In women, it usually causes cervical cancer, which will prevent a woman from having children or other things. Honestly, they did not seem as if they were very interested, but they did have some questions. Unfortunately, I was not able to answer all of them, lol. But doing this was kind of a pretty good experience.
I have no choice but to admit, I have absolutely no idea how this class pertains to what I want to do for a professional living. At first I wanted to become a doctor, but now I wish to become a pharmacist. I guess since I am a Christian, a certain level of honesty is required to be a pharmacist. For example, as a pharmacist, I cannot let someone have pills for free if they are a friend or relative. Also in making medicine, I will be dealing with peoples lives. I must be careful not to administer wrong medications or too much of a certain medication. But one thing this class has done is made me think about certain things. I guess it kind of made me think about what I want to do for a living too. At first I wanted to become a obstetrician, but decided that is not what i really wanted to do with my life. I decided to become a pharmacist because it is a profession that is mostly based on chemistry and that is a subject that I particularly like. I decided not to become a doctor because that profession is solely based on biology, which is a subject I hate. Even though pharmacy deals with a bit of biology, its just enough to where I would not hate it.
Feminist Criticism is useful because it kind of agrees with what the Bible says about women. That women should be in the guidance of their husbands, and so the blame will not be put on men. For example in the book of Genesis, it was Eve who allowed herself to be tempted by Satan into eating the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge. It was Rebekah who helped Jacob to succeed in stealing Esau’s blessing. It is by the fault of women that some of the bad things happened in the Bible. Therefore, men would not be blamed for some situations in it.
I didn’t do very well on the midterm. I didn’t fail it, but it surely could have been better. The map part was really hard. I could not memorize that no matter how hard I tried. I look back and realize that I could have studied more. Hopefully the final will be better. It HAS to be better, lol.
