Week 9

Week 9 people!!!!! Only 6 more to go!!!! Well so far, I went to another school. This time I went to Edna Karr. This is a school over the river where my high school english teacher teaches. So I felt comfortable going there and talking to his class. He also spoke to another teacher and made sure it was fine if I spoke to his class. Of course, i spoke to my old english teacher, Mr. Tilller’s class first. I was really nervous because I did not know ANY of the students in the class. I tried to make jokes to ease my tension, but sometimes I did not succeed in being funny. I had explained to them how I was trying to do a project for my theology class and I decided to inform kids about sexually transmitted diseases and to promote abstinence and safe sex. I basically repeated the things I said at the last school I went to, but I could not go to any middle school classes because this school did not have middle school level grades. First I asked if any of them knew about the sexually transmitted disease HPV. The majority of the class raised their hands. Of course I had expected this, since this was a tenth grade high school class. They told me that they had heard about it on the news and how they knew about the vaccine that was made for it. There was even a girl in the class who had gotten the vaccination. Then I told them about other sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and herpes. I told them about some of the affects of certain sexually transmitted diseases and some of them were surprised at what they heard. I also told them how many people were infected with the disease HPV and how most are not even aware that they are carrying the disease. I explained how this disease sometimes has no symptoms at all, and causes cervical cancer in women. I also told them this disease also affects men, but not as seriously as it affects women. This class did not seem too interested in what I had to say. I guess this was due to the fact that they were older and basically knew about most of the stuff I had to say. Since this was the case, I had decided to just ask them about what they thought about safe sex. All of them said they agreed with it, so i asked them how many of them actually practice it. Some of them said that they were not sexually active, so basically they just practice abstinence. This was a response from mostly girls, lol. Those who surprisingly admitted that they were sexually active said they practiced safe sex. At least SOME said that, lol. I told them that sexually transmitted diseases are running rapid across the country. And that it was IMPERATIVE that if they were sexually active, that they practice safe sex. I suggested to them that they practiced “abstinence” because that is truly the only safe sex there is. I told them that not even condemns are one-hundred percent effective. Most of them agreed. But i saw that some had that look on their faces that said they would take their chances, lol. After I left Mr. Tiller’s classroom, I went to another class. This was a ninth grade class. Again, I had repeated what I had said from the other class. When I told them about HPV and its effects, some of them were ignorant of this knowledge. Most of them did not know that HPV can cause cervical cancer. This is what I kind of expected since they were a little bit younger. I kind of heard a little bit of giggling whenever I mentioned “sex.” But again, I expected this type of juvenile behavior from them. I also tried to emphasize the practice of abstinence and safe sex to them. It seemed like most of the guys were just into the idea of practicing safe sex than abstinence. More of the girls seemed to be interested in the idea of practicing abstinence. Overall, they seemed kind of interested in what I had to say, so I think I made a pretty decent impact on the students.
According to the Deuteronomistic Historian, a good king is one who totally devotes himself to God. A good king is one that solemnly worships God and leads his people in the manner of worshiping the Lord also. Another thing the historians expected of a king was for him to be able to create a powerful army to protect his people. With putting God first, they believed this could be done and that the army the king created would be strong and powerful. They also believed a good king should put himself before his people, so that his own needs would not come first. The king should always do what is best for the kingdom.
Deuteronomistic Historians would not have approved of George W. Bush. He is not a leader who puts his country before himself, nor does he do what is best for the people. For example, Bush i still keeping America’s troops in Iraq fighting in a pointless war. He i still letting them die for simple fact of him obtaining more oil so that he can make more money. This is not what is best for the country. Families are pointlessly losing their loved ones. For some reason it seems the President does not realize this. Or is it that he just does not care. It seems as long as he is making money, the lives of the country’s citizens is incidental.
The worst thing that King David did was commit adultery with Bethsheba, the wife of Uriah the Hittite. He saw Bethsheba one day when she was bathing and obviously thought she was very beautiful. He had known she was married because once he saw her, he had asked who she was and found out she was a married woman. Despite of her being married, he had sex with her and as a result, she became pregnant. After he knew she was pregnant, he decided to save his skin by getting Uriah to come home from a war so that he could go home and sleep with Bethsheba. Therefore, making Uriah believe the child was his. After Uriah kept refusing to go to his wife, David had him put on the front lines in the war in order for Uriah to be killed. As a result of all of this, God punished David by taking the life of the child born between himself and Bethsheba. I guess a person does reap what he/she sows.

You sound enthusiastic about this semester almost being over, can’t say that I blame you…..Good ideas for your project it is nice to see that you are actually interacting with the students, I am waiting for January so that hopefully I can have the same opportunity. I think that educating them is half the battle of tackling the issue, at least now they can make informed choices.

You are one brave soul to speak all those people at one time. I have the worse case of stage fright and I know that I would not be able to do what you did. I can relate to telling a joke and no one laughing either. I am glad that you stuck to your project and you were able to succeed in it. I’m also glad that you were able to find many people who wanted to help you in your project. I know that is important for that information to be known for the younger people and I think it sound better if it comes from somebody who is close in age. I respected you for that.

I agree with Jessica. It’s great that you’re interested in educating others about this issue. I commend your efforts! Hopefully they’ll listen to you and try to understand that sex isn’t all about having fun… it can be dangerous!

Very good progress and good work. It is good to know that some of these high school kids have been educated about this topic. You are doing something that is necessary and has been overlooked by many people including our neglible government and our officials. You are doing well. Good job.

I would have been very nervous in your situation also. It takes a lot of guts to talk to children, especially when you are not too much older than them. I’m glad that they at least answered some questions, at least if they weren’t listening; you put a bug in their ears. Wish you Luck on the rest.
