Although they didn’t fight violence, specifically gun violence, and were often the subjects of violence in their communities, the biblical prophets relate to my project because they wanted to change the world and enlighten others.
Job’s experience relates to rebuilding New Orleans because almost everything material in Job’s life was destroyed, but he still had the strength to believe in God and eventually make a come back! New Orleans lost a lot in the way of people and homes and places and everything, but it’s coming back and I believe it will eventually become an even better than it was pre-Katrina because the people living here now have the desire to keep the city together.
Psalm 22 is about having faith in God even if you feel like He isn’t listening, because He is. Psalm 22 encourages people to believe in God and to continue praying. A lot of the kids in my Sunday School class tell me they pray for something and it never happens. Once a little girl came to me very upset because her dog had been hit by a car and she wanted it to get better and had prayed for it to get better and it had died. I explained to her that just because we don’t get the answer we want doesn’t mean that God isn’t listening to us. Sometimes he tells us “no.” She understood a little better when I asked her if she loved her dog (she said yes), and then asked if she would still want her dog to be alive even if it was in a lot of pain (she said no), and then I said that maybe the dog had been hurt so badly that it would have been in a lot of pain had God allowed it to live. She decided it was good that her dog had continued on to heaven and asked me to pray with her to make sure it was in heaven waiting for her. I realize Psalm 22 is more about continuing faith in God through prayer and not being discouraged when we feel He isn’t paying attention, but I thought I’d throw my own thoughts about the subject in here as well!
