My project is going okay. I never thought that I would enjoy shopping for someone besides myself. But it does get a great satisfaction that the things that I am buying it going to someone in need. I still need practice picking out clothes for little girls though. If it wasn’t for my friend I think there poor child would have the worst clothes. I don’t get to see them open the presents that we give them. First because it is given to the by I think our manger and also I would already been at home in Georgia by then. I don’t care though. It is enough that I can say that I participated in the event. I think for next year I am going to participate in more events offered at my job. This one was fun.
The story of Tobit beings with the man Tobit. Tobit is a Jew that always follows all the traditions and religion of his people. He was from the Naphtal tribe living around the time of the deportation of the northern tribe to Assyria. There is was against the law to burry the dead. However, Tobit disobeyed the laws and gave proper burials to the death. When the king found out what he was doing, the king took away his property and had him exiled out of Nineveh. After the king died Tobit returned and continued to give burials. One night as he was burring a body he fall asleep outside. A bird passed by and spilled dropping on his eyes. He became blind after that and his life began to suffer. He soon wished for his death. The next character that comes along is Sarah. Sarah is a young girl that lives in Media. She is sad because she has lost seven husbands to the demon of lust Ashmadai. She come and kidnapped and kills the man before they can consummate the marriage. God decides to send an angle drown to them to save them both from a terrible life. He sends Raphael the angel of healing to save them. In the mean time Tobit has sent his son, Tobias to collect money that was owed to him in a far off land in Media. The angel, Raphael, pretends to be Azariah, one of Tobit friend. He offers to aid and protect Tobias on his trip to media. On their way, Tobias is attacked by a big fish. They are able to kill it. They eat the flesh but take the insides in order to create a medicine. When they finally arrive at Media they meet Sarah and her family. They fall in love and get married. On the night of their wedding, Raphael tells Tobias to put the fish liver and heart into the fire to drive Ashmodai away. Ashmodai fleas and Raphael follows and binds the demon. Tobias survives the wedding night much to the surprise of Sarah father who had already begun to dig a grave for him. The father orders the ceremony to be twice as long so he can cover the hole. Tobias makes it back home to his father and is able to cure his blindness with more the fish guts. The main lesson of the story would be that the belief in God could bring about miracles when you least expect it. Both Tobit and Sarah were willing to give up on finding happiness and just as they were done hoping it came into their life. Thus is the power of prayer.
The Maccabees covers the struggle of the Jewish people to take back their government and land. It begins with Alexander the Great and his conquer over Judea. After he died, Judea came under the rule of Antiochus. Antiochus conquers Jeruslaem. While there he removes pecices from the temple and killes many Jews. Then he imposes a tax on them. But that was not enough. He then takes away many religious rights of the Jewish people. The temple is destroyed and circumsition is outlawed. It is also against the law to observe sabbath. Antiochus trie to introduce a Helenisticall society. many places in pubilic where a man would be nude to discourage the man from circumstion. Many of them were for into foreskin restorian. It was Mattathias who ralied the people to come to a ‘holy war’ against the controling powers. He and his three sons led a revolt against the government in place. They succeeded. The temple was rebuilt and ritual sacrifices began again. Mattathias was the first to lead the people in a revolt. He was given the name Maccabees by the people. It means the hammer. The Maccabees are consider to be heroic because they were able to stand up for their beliefs and lead the people against a very large and powerful army. His reason for was were not selfish. They only wanted the right to worship their god in the way that they were thought by generations of people. It is not just the fact that they fought and won their rights back.
A text critisium would be the looking at a biblical text and oberseving the different readings. A source critisium would a be look at a critisium between a reading and the other reading that in might have come from.
