Week 14 Grade Time

1010 words by Julian Jordan

A lot of Christians believe that the world will end in their lifetimes because they see the perverbial “writing on the wall”. They believe that things now are ten times worse than they were in the past. They interpret things that they may read in the Book of Revelation(or the Revelation to St. John the Divine) and the Book of Daniel as things that are indicators that the world is ending soon. Things like natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and typhoons are signs that God is preparing the world for the “New Jerusalem” to them. Today’s extreme Christians tend to believe that things that were always done behind closed doors but are now out in the open(homosexuality, abortion) are another reason for the approaching Apocalypse.Which, I tend to belive is false because even if its behind closed doors God still knows about it. When in all actuality, these Christians may just be looking for an answer to the question of why all these bad things are happening. When their reason runs out they turn to books like the Book of Revelation for answers. Some extreme christians go even as far as to try to start war in Isreal so the end of the world may come soon. Not actually realizing, that you can’t force God’s hand. I’m not sure on whether or not the world will end soon, but for that matter im no sure if anyone truly knows when the world will end. Even Jesus was not aware of this fact. It may not be in God’s plans for people to know when the world will end until it is deemed necessary.

The Bible movie we watched in class was about the prophet Jeremiah. In the movie Jeremiah was played by Patrick Dempsey. Jeremiah was visited by God at a very young age. In the movie he appeared to be 5 or 6. God told him that he would become a prophet and he would eventually spread his word through Jeremiah’s speeches. Jeremiah awoke thinking that it was only a dream. Years later, God appears to Jeremiah in the desert telling him that he shall soon be speaking his words Jeremiah is angered and confused when God tells him that he shall never marry or have any offspring. This is a problem because Jeremiah was in love with a young woman named Judith. Later, when doing a sacrifice at an altar, God appeared to Jeremiah and told the kings of the damage they were doing to there people. At that temple, which was the temple of Solomon, their were many rituals going on that were somewhat pagan.Afterwards, he was banished and fled to the desert. Jeremiah sees another vision in the desert and is given a sign in the form a follower to return to Judah. The follower may have been a significant sign because Jeremiah appeared to be in the middle of nowhere, for someone to find him was a miracle. After pleading with the new King of Judah, and even after using the yoke to express the danger of the approaching Babylon slavery, he is ignored. When Judith is murdered trying to save him, Jeremiah doesn’t speak God’s word for years. When the King of Judah, King Sedecia(Vincent Regan, Leonidas from 300!) could see that Jeremiah’s prediction was coming true he got on his knees and begged for his forgiveness. But when Jeremiah, explained to King Sedecia that he would in face become a slave even if he surrendered, he cast him back in prison. While in prison the Babylonian’s finished their conquest and released Jeremiah, allowing him to choice his place of residence. Jeremiah rebuilt the temple, in stone and in people’s hearts.

I thought the movie was good for a biblical movie. It wasn’t overly corny. It had some actors that I could actually recognize in the film. The movie didn’t sugar code death. I was suprised to see that each and everyone of his children were brutually murdered quickly. The movie actually made me want to learn more about Jeremiah and see if the move had any historical innacuricies. It actually didn’t have any glaring holes to my suprise.(Well, at least according to Wikipedia)

I believe that my overall grade should be a B. I believe that my project had very good intentions. But, will not make an immediate impact on anyone. Its hard for me to accept that, but its the cold hard truth. I could have lied and said that I deserved an A. But, I dont believe that I do. I still firmly belive that teacher’s pay salaries need to be raised. Writing a letter to my senator was the best way of means that I could pathom to try and change this injustice. Since I have no real political power, maybe this was a demon that I shouldn’t have tried to tackle. Maybe I should have thought smaller and volunteered my time at a homework help hotline or some day care or school. But, nevertheless this is the one I chose. I understand what it is. I have no regrets about my project. I belive that I may have changed a few people’s minds. My intentions were more or less intended to help people out for the future.

As far as my blog portion of the grade goes I also think that I deserve a B. Even though the grade may be the same I think that I did a better job of blogging that I did on my project. I had over the thousand words every week(maybe not many over). I had alot of good material inside of the blog. I may have been a little to wordy every now and then. But, when writing a thousand words, you have to have a little filler every now and then. My grammar may have had a few bad kinks every now and then but for the most part I thought that it was well written.

Thanks for your work this semester, and of course I share your idea that teacher’s salaries should be raised. Especially in the public schools in New Orleans.
