Week 15: Reflection
1003 words by Taieka Jackson
Through this class, I’ve learned to effectively analyze the bible as bible scholars would. I now use methods when reading the bible. I learned many strategies in decipher original from the altered. Because blogs were critically to my grade, they gave me motivation to use correct grammar and think more critically. Analyzing the biblical is sometimes difficult so I drastically improved my thinking skills. My project has not yet begin to change the world. Along with the youth at my church, we aim to first change our city then hopefully we will be salt and light for all who see.
I agree with James. He does not sugar coat the message but hits you where it hurts. Tough love is more of his style. He is strict and expects people who claim to be christians to act as they should. You can not follow Jesus and still live life sinning but come to church as if your church behavior is also your weekly behavior. I am also very strict on believers, If you are what you say then it should should. I should look at you and see Jesus within you. His aura should shine from your soul and your works. I don’t believe in being a half-way Christian. Either you live for Jesus or you live for your own selfish will. Jesus wants you to be hot or if not cold. He dislikes lukewarm believers because the are confused about whom they wish to serve. James dislikes those who believe all of the right things but live wrong. People think that believing that Jesus is the son of God and he rose from the dead is enough. Faith without works is dead. It makes no sense to be a christian and not live up to what Jesus wants you to.
The best part of the class was learning about Esther. That movie was intense and sweet. Esther poses as a Persian but she is really a Jew. She is made King Xerxes’ queen and saves the lives of countless jews. She truly fell in love with king Xerxes and risked her life to save her people. Haman had a plot to kill off all Jews but Esther destroyed his plan. In the bible, he pleads for his life on her bed King Xerxes thinks he attempts to molest her. Aside from his treachery he angers the King and is killed using the same noose he made for Mordecai.
But I also enjoy you Dr. Homan. You’re teaching style was great. You engaging and you really know the bible. Half of the time I’m wondering if your telling the truth. But that’s the fun part. I especially liked when you showed the photos of your wife being given the old age paternity test. you are extremely sarcastic which is very amusing.
The worst part of class was the powerpoint and the Extremely LONG readings. There would be many slides. Aside from listening to you we had to copy information from the slides. Sometimes you would go fairly fast and some of the slides weren’t really vital to us. Those required readings were absolutely terrible. You should summarize them for future students or at least shorten them. reading reading for a long time destroys my brain cells. Reading is supposed to be FUNdamental and build brain cells. Xavier expects me to be an elite student but kills my brain in the process. Please Excuss me for any wierd slang and/or rambling because my reading lamp’s energy/ heat is cooking my scalp and frying my brain. For the most part I really enjoyed your class. Not sucking up but I think you’re hilarious.
Theology should be apart of Xavier’s curriculum because it is a catholic institution after all. Theology is important. I helped me and it will continue to help others. It gives students insight about religions of all kinds. It’s very interesting and exciting. It thought me so many thing about the bible that I find helpful. I genuinely appreciate this class. But on the other hand, Theology has alot to do with my field of study. I aspire to become an Ob/Gyn. Because the bible encourages you to love your neighbor and treat them as yourself, it teaches me to be patient, kind, and compassionate towards my patients. I imagine that dealing with pregnant women won’t be easy and my faith is vital in ensuring these women are treated right. You asked what does this class have to do with my major. It does not have much to do with my major other than treating my teachers and peers with respect. It does however effect me in the future. The bible encourages servant hood and love for your brother. I have to use what I have learned to influence the world. Be Salt and Light and become change.
If they would have had Ob/Gyn’s in the time of Eve, childbearing would have been much easier. I am a strong christian and this class helps me in Every area of my life, not just my major. I work to continually become better. The lord himself practiced servant hood and I will too as I deliver babies into this world. My faith in God leads me to believe that taking advantage of this class and apply it to my life will help me to a great extent. And I will not confidently laugh at a ten page paper. I will initially moan then remember whom I serve. I can do all things through Christ Jesus he who strengthens me. But I do appreciate your class. I have enhanced my critical thinking skillsand ability to analyze LONG reading.

Xavier is killing your brain. You are right about that.
