The article Deception tells the story of Jacob and the trail of deception that runs through his family. The deceit begins when Jacob tricks his twin brother Esau into giving away his birth right. Then he later tricks his father Issac into giving him Esau’s blessing as well. This deceit would come back to haunt him. Some years later Jacob would be tricked by his own sons. Eight of Jacob’s ten sons sold their brother Joseph into slavery. They later told Jaob that he was eaten by wild beasts. Jacob was once again decieved by his uncle/father-in-law, Laban. Jacob thought that he was going to marry Rachel; however, on his wedding night he found Rachel’s eldest sister Leah in his wedding tent. Laban said that it was not right that the younger daughter be wed before the “first born. The line of deceit continues to run through the family with Rachel decieving her father and several other deceptions throughout the story. The line of deception comes to an end when Joseph chooses not to punish his brothers. Though Joseph found himself in a place of power he choose to help his brothers.
The story of Odysseus’ scar can be found in Book 19 of the Odyssey. Odysseus finally returns home after battle. His wife, Penelope, does not recognize him, but his maid Euryclea recognizes him by a childhood scar on his thigh. From here the story line is interrupted with the story of the scar came to be. This story, contrary to popular belief is not to build suspense but to relieve the tension.
Historical criticisms analyze the a story based the time period in which it was written. For example a giant in antiquity is very different form what we would consider a giant today. People in antiquity were much shorter so a man of about 6′5 would be considered a giant where as to us he would only be tall. Literary criticisms analyze a work through the methods the writer uses.
