Week 6
Project Status
My project to change the world is to work with Kiwanis Family organizations in the city, like Circle-K and Key Club, and tutor, mentor, and read to public school students in the city of New Orleans. My goal is to have three Key Clubs in the city and work with one elementary public school and visit it once a month for a full day. We will donate books to the students, and they will be able to keep and take the books home. I also plan to get some college students together and work with a middle public school and tutor and mentor the students in any area they may need.
Talking to the Director of Xavier University’s Family and Community Life Center, located at Xavier South on the fourth floor, she informed me of some possible grant opportunities to get books. She gave me a few to look at, and I am currently looking through each one to see which one would be the best. I would like to use the grant money to buy books and also use it to buy gifts for the kids for being good, while the students read to them. I have told my Kiwanis club about the project and they are very excited about what I have planned for the key clubs. They have also given me positive feedback on ways to change the project. I have decided that I will try to work with St. Augustine, St. Mary’s and Xavier Prep’s Key Clubs. I have sent an e-mail to the presidents of all three of the clubs explaining the project, the purpose of the project, and what I would like each of them to do. Since I am the Kiwanis Advisor for St. Augustine’s Key Club, it should be no problem getting the students and key clubbers to help in this project. I have mentioned the project to several of my college friends and all of them are excited and willing to help.
The college level of Kiwanis or the K-family is Circle K. None of the Historical Black Colleges and Universities in the city of New Orleans and the surrounding area: Dillard University, Southern University of New Orleans, Southern University of Baton Rouge and Xavier University, do not have a Circle-K.I think it be would a great idea to have one on campus, and especially to help with this project. When I started to look into getting a Circle-K started at Xavier University, I found out that someone had already started the process. When I contacted her she took a long time to respond. She has everything on the Circle-K level to start the club. The only hold back as of now is Xavier. They are pretty much giving her the run around for approval of the club. First they told her student government association had to be the ones to approve the club. Then they told her that since it was a community service organization then the MAX Office (Mobilization at Xavier) had to approve the club. So I am currently working with her to try to get through the red tape of Xavier University.
Write about how this class pertains to what you hope to do for a professional living
I think this class has to do with several things dealing with my professional living. Even though as of now my major is print journalism and my minor is political science, I plan to go to law school and then become a politician. As a lawyer I want to work with corporate law. I want to do this because I would like to make a lot of money, so that when I start to run for political office, I can finance my own campaign. I have wanted to be a politician ever seen I was really young. I feel that becoming a politician is the best way I can make a difference in my community and in the world. Growing up in New Orleans, I have seen several politicians be corrupt and go to jail for illegal activity. And I am tired of seeing years and years of politicians not take care of the poor people in our country. As a politician my main goal would be to help the poor people of this country. By this class making me doing community service to change the world, it will help me remember the people I have helped now, when I get older. Many politicians, who start off good, usually forget where they come from and do not help poor people. And there are several politicians who have never even spent time with poor people, or gotten their hands dirty to help people who are less fortunate than them. This change the world project helps me see people who need my help, so if and when I do become a politician I can look back to when I helped these people as a reminder of the type of work I should be doing with my influence.
This Intro to biblical studies course also gives me a good knowledge of the bible. One of the major concerns that politicians are faced with is the separation of church and state. By having a good knowledge of the contents of the bible and the meaning of the bible, I could pass the right laws.
All criticism is a good thing. It is always important to get feedback on something you are working on. Feminist Criticism gives a different perspective on things from a female point of view. It helps understand women just a little more and understand why they do some things.
I was pleased with my midterm grade. I could have done much better, but I have a million and one things on my plate this semester, and it is extremely hard for me to try and get this blogs finished. I did not study has hard as I should have for the Midterm exam. When I finally decided to sit down and study, the amount of studying I had to do hit me rather hard. But I will definitely study harder for the final.
