week 9

Okay, I took a long time to start my project. But now I found a charity that I really like. They are adopting a family at my job for the holidays. A family with five little girls has been selected. At first I didn’t put a lot of thought into it. I am a really bad procrastinator and I can’t help it. But once I took the time to actually look at the list it seemed like some that I could really get in to. I am a little scared. Even though I am a girl it is hard from my too find things for little girls. I am a bad judge when it comes to ding things like that. But I want to help. Especially now that Christmas is coming up. I think since I have gotten older Christmas does not mean the same that it use to mean to me. Before, I was the big organizer of Christmas in my house. We did the entire Christmas stuff listen to the music and have the big Christmas tree. We did everything excepted the Christmas lights but we always drove around the neighborhood to check out other people lights. The actual day we spent opening presents and visiting family. But now it’s just not the same as it used to be. I barely ever see my whole family together in place for any holiday. No one ever comes home. I don’t even think it is as much about the gifts as it is that but the company I miss more. I guess Christmas is more of a kid holiday anyway. They get the most enjoyment in opening the presents. Now that the holidays are back, I think that I would like to be responsible in giving that joy to a child. Maybe even get back some of my lost Christmas joy. I think that if I stick with something special I can get something that they might like. If not it is always safer to ask somebody. I have a lot of help coming from the people I work with.
Deuteronomistic Historians pay close attention to the books of Kings, Judges, and Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy is one of the last appearances of Moses in the text. Because he has disobeyed God he is not allowed into the Promised Land. Here he gives a long speech about the importance of following God’s word. Then he is left while the rest of his people are led into the Promised Land by Joshua. A good king according to a Deuteronomistic historian would king who kept a good grasp on the Ten Commandments and never strayed far from the lord. It is important that he keeps with the traditions of his elders and pass them on to the next generation. All actions regarding the city must be made in the benefit of the people and not just for himself. When you obey all of God’s commandments your city prospers. But if you disobey God you and your city suffer for your sins.
I don’t believe that George Bush would qualify as a good lead in the eyes on a Deuteronomistic historian. He has broken many of the commandment. When he lied about the weapons of mass destruction he was a false witness. By his order many innocent people on both sides of the war have died. He has stolen a lot of oil from foreign countries. His overall approach to the government he cause a lot of pain with his people most of it being for his own gain. There seems to be no balance in the way that money is use in the country. Many people can not get help for the government when it comes to education and health care. Many of the best in life seems to go to the rich.
The worse sin that David committed was covet with Bathsheba. This is his worst because in order to cover the truth about what he did he had to do more sins. He had a man killed just to cover the truth. It is because of his sins that his family suffers.
The first temple was built on Mount Moriah the place known for the almost sacrifice of Isaac by Abraham. The building began with David but Solomon finished the temple. The temple took seven years to complete. Facing the east the temple was sixty cubits long, twenty cubits wide, and 30 cubits tall. It had two bit pillars. The temple had three main rooms, vestibule, the holy place, and holy of holies. The Ark of the Covenant was place in the holy of holies It represented the center of the universe for the people. When the Egyptians invaded Judah they damaged the temple took many of its treasures including the Ark. During the repair of the temple, King Josiah clamed discover a scroll written by Moses. This leads to many religious reforms. The temple of Solomon is the only temple that people are allowed to worship. The temple is destroyed in 586 BCE when the Babylonians invaded Jerusalem.
It 538 BCE, the Persians allow the rebuilding of a new temple. Zerubbable is chosen to lead the construction he is also a descendent of David. The new temple the same width and length but it was sixty feet tall. It took five years to build. Since there the ark was lost they put no furniture in the temple. Instead they decorated the temple with gold ornaments. Though many people rejoiced about the new temple many of the priest were upset because it war inferior to the old one. When the Seleucid took control of Jerusalem they destroyed the temple. The Jews rebelled and under the leadership of Judas Maccabee they retook the temple. They only had enough oil to burn the lamps in the temple for one day but the lights burned for eight. This laid the foundation for the Jewish tradition Hanukkah. The temple went untreated though the Greek and Roman rule. But by the time Herod the great made the extensive repairs it was one the largest sanctuary.

I FEEL THE SAME WAY THAT U DO ABOUT CHRISTMAS. I’M ALSO A BIG PROCRASTINATOR AS WELL. BUT OUTSIDE OF ALL THAT I HOPE. GIVING JOY TO OTHERS, ESPECIALLY KIDS IN UNLIKE ANY OTHER FEELING IN THE WORLD. IT DEFINITELY PAYS OFF MENTALLY AS WELL. GOOD LUCK!

My mom “adopts” a family for Christmas, too! It’s a lot of fun to go around picking stuff up for the kids. A lot of times you have to pick things they really need over things that they really want (like they might want a doll or a truck, but their parents put down that they really need new clothes that fit, etc.). It’s tough to buy things for someone you don’t know, but it’s also a lot of fun. Good luck with your project.
