I chose these people because I figured that they work at the best places to place my program thing in. School campuses and churches are filled with adolescents, so why not start there right?! So I had to first start by calling because I didn’t know who is who or what other places to start with. The school systems are very different here. I called a couple of the private schools and was QUICKLY shot down. One lady at one of the schools I called was very rude and basically was like my idea was not for their environment. Whatever that is suppose to mean, forget her too! There were a few schools that just said time did not permit because of other activities, which is fine by me. I just had to keep calling until I got acceptance. When I came across Orleans Parish I was relieved. Oh I chose a high school because, well I just did. It’s not as hard to transition into middle school from elementary as it is to transition into high school from middle. Plus puberty can make some students act a fool once those hormones start kicking in. My mom use to say that to me and I see it with a lot of young students around that ago. So high school it was.
Here is the letter I sent out. I just changed some of the wording to suit the place. Like the church letter is just slightly different then the one below.
To Whom It May Concern,
My name is Janice McIntosh. I am a recent transfer student attending Xavier University of Louisiana. I am majoring in Psychology and my minor is History. Once I am finish obtaining my degrees, I want to study the behavior of at risk adolescents and teach history at a Community College. I am currently enrolled in Theology: Introduction to Biblical Studies. As apart of a project for the semester each student was asked to think of three problems we see pledging our world. After identifying the three problems we were then asked to choose one of them and create some type of service learning project we saw fit that would aid in the problem in any way. The three problems I chose was the HIV/AIDS epidemic, poverty, and mental health. From those three I chose to focus on mental health for my project.
I actually started my process with another organization and would like to branch out to your facility. The program is along the lines of a group mentoring program/activity session. The general focus will be on self-esteem, self improvement, self respect, confidence, and other characteristics that would initially create “A Better Me”, which is the title. The groups I have already started with are the young adults at The Boys and Girls Club of New Orleans. My general goal is to initially boost over all self image which is important in our youth today because they are the leaders of tomorrow. That is why I chose the Boys Hope Girl Hope. My first step was contacting someone that could approve my idea and help me start the process of beginning at their facility. That is the point of my letter.
I have a general outline of what I would like to do and what the sessions will have. It explains each topic that will be covered and what activities will be done to get the young adults active in the presentation. If there are any objections, I would be more than happy to revise in whatever manner we agree will better suit your facility.
I appreciate your time and consideration. If there are any comments, questions, or concerns you can reach me at (314) 956-4541 or (504) 520-2378. I can also be reached through email at JMcInto1@xula.edu. I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Janice McIntosh

African American criticism is helpful because like many of the stories in the Bible are in Africa. Like the 3 major nations were named after and from the descendent from the 3 sons. You also get other aspects from African Americans. Different races think differently on certain subjects so it’s good to have that different point of view. Like who really would take in to consideration a white male’s explanation on racial profiling DWB (driving while black), NOBODY. Vise-versa a black male can give an explanation on what a white male gets profiled for. I guess being a serial killer could be an example. Well basically the other view is good. Plus it helps with like the actual literature because growing up I was so convinced there wasn’t any black people back then because none of my Sunday school lessons involved African Americans. Once we started talking about the land and how the tribes were split I found out that it was actually in different countries in Africa where the stories took place not just Egypt and the Middle East. Maybe it’s me but for some reason I really didn’t consider the Middle East being apart of Africa. Like in Missouri there is St. Louis and then East St. Louis. Since they are similar in name everyone thinks Oh that’s all apart of St. Louis but East St. Louis is actually apart of Illinois. If that makes sense to my point, IDK. Ok so the criticism is important for those reason and because it doesn’t just look at race because that really wasn’t a factor back then. Wish it was like that now!
Oh for my project I still don’t know how to post the picture so here is the address thing fyi its butterflies:
