Tobit is a book in the Bible but many people may not be familiar with it because it is in the Apocrypha. AProcrypha means hidden. This is because not all Christian denominations believe in the apocrypha. Orthodox Christians and catholics definitely do. In the book of Tobit it talks about the life of Tobit. It begins talking about how in his younger years he was very respected and was always looked at for advice. He was very wise. This is because he was close to God. Later, his love for God would save him form a tribulation that would enter his life. Tobit had a son named Tobias. His son was like his father in that he was wise and close to God. One day as Tobit was sitting outside, a bird pooped on his eyes. Immediately he became blinded. This upset him but he still kept full faith in God. One day his son Tobias had to travel. Tobit was scared to let his son travel alone. A strange man appeared at the door and said he was going in the same direction as Tobias was going and that he would be happy to make sure Tobias went and came back safetly. Tobit was so happy and he glorified God for it. Tobias went on the journey with this man. On his journey he got married. The woman that Tobias got married to was feared by all men because her two previous husbands had died on the night of their weddings. They believed she had an evel spirit following her. Tobias had strong faith in God and he was not scared. On their wedding night Tobias told the woman that they would fast and pray for three days before he went into her. She agreed and that is exactly what they did. After the three days Tobias still stayed alive and everyone knew he was a man of God. Finally the stranger, Tobias and his wife went on their way home. On the way home Tobias went fishing. He cought a fish. When it came time to cook the fish he could’t believe what he had found. He found money in the fish. He began glorifying God. The stranger told him to take something from the fish and put it on Tobit’s eyes and he would see again. When they got near home Tobias ran ahead greeted Tobit. They glorified God together and Tobias put the medication on his father’s eyes. Tobit regained his sight and said a long prayer. Later they began looking for the stranger. When they found him they thanked him and wanted to give him food and money. The stranger refused and revealed himself to them This stranger was Archangel Rafiel. He was sent to accompany Tobias on his journey and to heal Tobit. Both Tobit and Tobias rejoiced and worshipped God. The point of this story is that even though there are hardships in life, if your heart is with God then He will never forsake you.
The macabees were known as rebels. They were brothers fighting for the same cause. They didn’t believe that Jerusalem was the place to pray. They had conspired to tear the temple down. They did just that. They went in and created a revolt in the temple. They burned down everything. The whole temple was lit. It must have been an amazing sight. This is where the jewish feast of the lights originated. There was light all over because of the fire that was in the temple. The Macabees are considered heros because they went against the norm and revolted against those they saw unjust. They stood up for what they believed. Yes, they did cause a lot of destruction, but they still stood up for what they believed. This is why they were considered heroes.
