Week 14

Some Christians in the first century AD believed that Jesus might return, which represents the end of times, during their lifetime because Jesus had said to his followers to be alert or be ready at all times which started the doctrine of Imminence. So, starting from the first century to today, Christians still uphold this doctrine. Some Christians may also think that the world will end in their lifetimes because it is said that the ending will come sooner than later. I also think that Christians are trying to make people do according to God’s will which will mean that they will have to change their ways sooner than later.

I think that my grade for my blog entries should be at least a “B”. I have mostly turned in everything on time (unless the theology website was not working) and have met the 1000 word mark unless you stated otherwise. I also think that I have also managed to accomplish my project although at the beginning it was very broad. Although, I wasn’t able to do many of the things that I planned such as having my team builder exercies and volunteer program for the freshman in the freshman seminar class, I still think I managed to help Xavier know more about different cultures. I am still planning to sign up to be an assisstant for an instructor for freshman seminar when I become a junior next fall of 2009, and I still managed to get people of different races to interact by having the African Student Union fair and the Asian Association club handing out food and showing Asian phrases. I think that I accomplished my goal of teaching others about those who are different from them. I also helped today’s youth by hosting a Halloween party at Hope Haven with my fellow Residential Assistants, which helps our youth in letting them know that someone cares about them. I did not mention this before but I also helped educate our freshman girls at Katharine Drexel Hall during the month of September and October to raise awareness about healthier eating habits and the election. In September for the Healty Campus month me and my fellow residential assistants set up Katharine Drexel Hall’s front desk as if it was a store and put pictures of healthy and non-healthy items and instead of a price check we had a calorie check. We served healthy food and even made the front desk the check out lane. We passed out pamphlets about how to stay healthy and healthy foods to eat also. This helped educate today’s youth about how to live a healthy and long life by eating the right things. During the month of October we set up a election section and demonstrated each of the candidates’ policies on the war in Iraq, higher education, health care, and ways to be more friendly to the environment. We had a little voting booth near the front desk, the Presidential Oath on the ceiling, pictures of the candidates and their vice presidents with their campaign buses, and the debate states. Hopefully this educated the residents of Katharine Drexel into making a well-informed and educated decision at the voting booths. We also handed out pamphlets on how to vote. I am also trying to set up a Toy’s for Tots drive in my residential hall. I donated a couple of toys myself. This will make the residents at Katharine Drexel feel that it does matter if they care and make whoever will be recieveing these gifts feel special and that someone cares for them just like those kids that we invited for the haloween party.
I also set up a keeping it clean project. The reason for this project is to show how clean, or dirty Katharine Drexel Hall really is. Hopefully through this experiment, I could teach young women about cleanliness, and good antiseptic techniques such as using Lysol or washing your hands.
I treated this experiment like a before and after topic. I took swabs of the 1st floor door to the residential rooms, the computer rooms, sink knobs, the bathroom toilet seats, shower floor, and elevator buttons, microwave, and shower heads. I then placed the swabs into a sterile agar plate so whatever bacteria that is was on the object is in the plate. Immediately following this, I cleaned the exact area that I took the swab from previously with some Clorox wipes. Exactly after this, I will then take another swab of the area that I just cleaned and put it in another sterile agar.
I placed my results on a poster board Katharine Drexel and explain to them what I found for each location and showed them how dirty it was. Obviously the agar plate with the swab after the Clorox was cleaner. I also posted up the most germ infected areas there are such as a purse or an automatic teller machine, and I posted up ways to stay clean such as washing your hands. Hopefully I am teaching those who are younger than me to keep it clean in Katharine Drexel, because sometimes I see students walking around barefoot are not washing their hands which is very sanitary.
Recently, me and my residential assistants went to Wynhoven Healthcare center for retired people, which is also on West Bank across from West Jefferson Medical Center. While we were there we sung some christmas carols such as “Jingle Bells” and “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” We also handed out christmas gifts. This lets the elderly know that they are not forgotton and are still important in today’s society. I think that they enjoyed it because one of the workers wanted us to come back another time.
