Tobit is the story about a man named Tobit and a woman named Sarah. One day, while on the job Tobit falls asleep under a tree and birds poop in his eyes, blinding him. At that moment he wants to die. At the same time a woman named Sarah from Media asks to die because she has been married seven times and is still a virgin. Every time she gets married a demon named Asmodeus comes and kills her husband’s on their wedding night. Because of this, God decides to send a healing angel in human form named Raphael to help them both. Tobit decides to love only because he remembers a debt he hadn’t collected yet in Media, so he sends his son Tobias to collect it. Tobias and Raphael set out on their journey to Media but almost don’t make it after being attacked by a huge fish. They however successfully kill the fish, feast on it for dinner and save the heart, liver, and gallbladder for medical purposes. When they arrive in Media, they end up staying at Sarah’s house. While staying there, Tobias and Sarah fall madly in love and decide to get married. Sarah’s father, knowing of her past husbands’ fate, digs Tobias’s future grave for him not knowing this time would have another outcome. The fish heart and liver actually save Tobias by burning a smoke that scares the demon Asmodeus away to Egypt. Raphael then imprisons him forever, allowing Tobias and Sarah to grow old together. The story has a happier ending when they return to Tobias’ house. They return the owed money to his father and rub the fish gallbladder on his eye’s enabling him to see again. Then Raphael reveals himself, letting them know he is an angel before departing. I’m guessing the moral of the story is that God may not come when you want him to, but he’s always on time. He always hears your prayers; he just tries to find the best thing to do for you so you have to be patient.
People consider the Maccabees heroic because they were the first to revolt against Antiochus IV’s decrees. Antiochus IV worshiped idols on the Temple’s alter, banned circumcision, traditional Jewish sacrificed, and the reading and obeying of the Law of Moses. Maccabees faith in God didn’t allow him to be afraid of Antiochus IV, like most were.
