My hurricane story is not as bad as most. We did not lose much. I did not even know a hurricane was coming until the day before it made landfall. I remember the weekend very clear because a lot of family events were going on that weekend. We were having a family reunion. It did not seem like a natural disaster was going to happen. It was very pretty outside the Saturday before. I guess that was the calm before the storm. We were trying to evacuate to Texas but we did not make it there because the traffic was so bad. We ended up in Lafayette, Louisiana and stayed at a friend’s house. Not much happened there. We did not lose power or anything. We did not think it was as bad as it turned out to be. We went back home and we did not have electricity so we did not know what was going on elsewhere. We went to my friend’s house to wash clothes and enjoy the airconditioner. We turned on the television and it was unbelievable. There were people standing on the roof tops hoping for someone to rescue them. Suddenly I realized how fortunate I was and how good God had been to me. He had spared me my home and my family. I had been complaining about how hot I was but stopped when I saw that. I realized that things could have been a lot worse for me. I could have been one of those people. It was definitely a wake up call for me. My life has not been the same since Hurricane Katrina. It has definitely changed for the better. I am very excited about this class. I was brought up in the church and used to go to Sunday School every Sunday. I haven’t been going since I’ve been in college so certain things are a bit foggy to me and I hope that taking this class will clear things up for me. I never really understood how to read and understand the Bible so hopefully this class will teach me about that. Even though I only took this class because it is a requirement, I think it is a very useful class to take. I think taking this class truly does make us more well rounded young adults. I believe that everyone should have at least a little Bible literacy. I hope that taking this class and learning more about how to ready the Bible will help me to want to read the Bible more. I think that the Bible is a very powerful tool. The Bible has many scriptures that can help us with whatever we’re going through. Reading the Bible, understanding, and believing in it will bring us closer to God. Reading the Bible will help us understand why we need to give God praise and acknowledge all good things he does for us. I think the Bible is a good book because it tells us exactly what Jesus went through for us. It shows how good God is to have given his only son so that our sins would be forgiven. I have had a lot of background in the Bible as a child. It is a little foggy because I was so young and did not pay attention in church half of the time because I did not always understand what was being taught. As I got older though I started paying more attention in church because I understood the importance of knowing God. With him in my life I know that all things are possible. I have recently changed my major from Chemistry Pre-Pharmacy to Speech Pathology with a minor in Spanish. Like many students, I quickly realized that pre-pharmacy was not the major for me. I think that this course has a lot to do with my major. Without God in my life I would not have the strength or ability to complete this major. I also would not have the strength to go to my job daily and deal with things on the job such as co-workers who aren’t to pleasant to be around. Having God in my life, I am able to pray to him and ask him to help me get through what would seem to be the impossible. I believe that this course has a lot to do with every major whether we see it or not. I have read the course commitments, and I feel that I can follow these commitments. I feel that they are all fair and the class should abide by them. I belive that we should all have a positive attitude about the class whether we were forced to take the class or not. The fact is we have to take the class so we might as well have a positive attitude and make the best of it. Lamentations is about how the people in Jerusalem were not doing the right thing so God performed an action to show them that they were not in control. I guess this is related to Hurrican Katrina because this natural disaster was just that. It was a total disaster. It is said by many people that Hurrican Katrina was an action performed by God to get everyone’s attention. God did this to show exactly how much we do need him and that we need to thank him daily because he is the only one that can bring us through devastating things such as Hurrican Katrina. 586 B.C.E. is an important date in the Bible because Jerusalem is conquered by Babylon and the church is destroyed. The Merneptah Stele is a story about King Merneptah. It tells about how he was such a great king. The point of the Merneptah Stele is to make sure that everyone knew how powerful he really was. This pertains to the course because it mentions Israel which is a very important place in the Bible. The point of showing the Babe Ruth clip is to show us that we will never know the true story with certain events in history. It is believed that Babe Ruth made a certain gesture before he made the home run. Some say he did make the gesture, others say he did not. We will never know if Babe Ruth really did that just like we will never know that certain events that are in the Bible happened just like it is written in the Bible. The point of the clips was to show us that different people have different perceptions about things.
