Of the 23 years that i have lived in New Orleans, hurricane Katrina was the most memorable to me. When katrina just got into the gulf my family didn’t want to evacuate. They figured that it was going to do the same thing that most big storms did, which was turn at the last minute. Fortunately, for some odd reason, that Sunday before Katrina hit, my family made the choice of evacuating. We decided to go to Houston, when we got to Houston we basically treated like it was just a trip. We never really paid any attention to the news and spent our money freely, since we all assumed that everything will be ok and we will be back in our house once the storm passed. Little did we know, after the hurricane hit EVERYTHING was a mess. We were very much depressed after hearing how much water we received in our area (New Orleans East). After knowing that we received a hard hit, all we wanted to do was go home and check on everything. Since New Orleans was so damaged and chaotic after the storm, no one was allowed to come back for a period of time. When we were in Houston we stayed in a hotel, after the storm passed, we had to come up wth a plan for a place to stay until we can actually come back home. We wanted to be close to home so we drove back towards Louisiana. We stopped in Lafayette, but found no place to stay. We then stopped in Baton Rouge and still no place to stay. We didn’t want to stay in a hotel since we wanted to save as much moey as we can util we can start working again. We then made the decision to stay in Dallas since my fiance’s sister-in-law had a vacant house that was fully furnished and she didn’t mind us staying there until we can come back home. We stayed there for approximately a week and then my fiance’s sister got in touch with one of her clients from work, who helped us find an apartment in Mandeville, where we lived for a little over a year. Everything we went through was no where near depressing compared to trying to rebuild. When we walked into the house for the first time, everyone wanted to cry. We had almost four feet of water in our house. EVERYTHING in the house was damaged. We basically lost everything. If we didn’t lose our stuff from the flood or mold, then we lost it from looting. Our house was looted not once but Twice after the storm. The first time around they took all the electronics that was upstairs, and the second time around they took the 65 inch television and also took apart all of the bed frames and took it with them. All I have to say now is that, I learned from experience, if ever I have to evacuate again, I will make sure I bring ALL of my valuables. I will not make the mistake and ASSUME that it will be like the other storms that turned the last minute.
My thoughts so far for this class right now is just like any other class. No matter if it interesting or not I have to focus on making a decent grade and pass this course. I will not lie and say that I took this class because I want to know about the bible. Not that I don’t want to know about the bible, but I have to take this class since theology was a prerequisite for my major. I actually chose Intro to Biblical studies beacause it seems more interesting to me than Christian faith, and also because I am SUPPOSE to know a little bit about the bible since I did go to CCD for about 10 years of my life. Now, just because I went to CCD for 10 years it doesn’t mean that I know about the bible. I was raised a catholic and you know , when I was younger I didn’t think it was all that important to actually pay attention in CCD. Boy do I wish I paid attention in class when I was younger. This class would probably be as easy as 123 if I did. Well, I guess I shouldn’t take things for granted next time around.
As for my professional vocation, I am planning on going to Pharmacy school. Thanks to Katrina it helped me make the decision to study pharmacology. Before katrina, I wanted to become a nurse. After katrina I changed my mind and didn’t want to be a nurse, but I still want to major in something in the medical field. I then made my mind and decided to go to Ultrasound school. I applied into an ultrasound program in Florida and graduated and became a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer in September 2007. Working as a sonographer I had to know many pathologies and it lead me to wondering what actually cure certain pathologies. Therefore, I made the decision to go back to school and try to get into the Pharmacy program here at Xavier University. Honestly, I have absolutely no idea what this class have to do with my chosen profession, but I am always willing to find out.
As for your class policies, I agree to following them. I will be able to commit to these policies. Some might be slightly difficult , but I will try with the besst of my ability to do so.
I believe that 586 BCE was a key event in the bible because, from what I remember in class, it was when the Jerusalem was defeated by the Babylons. Lamentation is the book of the old testament. Its usually read by the jewish people. The Merneptah Stele was the first stone that mentioned the bible. It basically look like a tombstone. I am assuming that since this is a biblical studies class this stone pertains to this class by it being the first written thing(assumption) that mentions the bible.
I think that the purpose of the Babe Ruth clips shown in class was to show us how as time pass, a story when told will always be updated to whatever or however that lifestyle is at the moment. By showing this, you can compare it to the bible. The Bible is also written that way. What it is , is that when it is being re written people “modify” it to make it sound more updated I guess.
