Week 02: Problems in the World

1676 words by kateyjames

The world is a place that has been deteriorating as time progresses.  Nowadays the world contains so many problems it is physically impossible to improve each and every one of them.  Many people try to develop different projects that will help improve our world.  In my opinion there are three main problems that severely put a strain on the earth and also humankind.  The first problem that severely affects humankind is global warming.  Global warming is extremely serious because it not only affects one country, but it is a problem that is affecting the entire world.  Significant temperature increases throughout the past few years proves that global warming is something that needs to be acknowledged and improved.  Wikipedia further states that, “The climate model projections indicate that global surface temperature will likely rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 degrees Celsius during the twenty-first century.”  Although these numbers may not seem significant the effects on the Earth are proving otherwise.  With an increase in temperature the Earth will begin to experience more intense natural disasters.  As seen with Hurricane Katrina, the strength and size of hurricanes have substantially increased throughout recent years.  Along with natural disasters, the Earth will also suffer from much more intense heat.  With heat increasing, this will also cause humans to be at more of a risk in developing life threatening problems such as skin cancer.  Human beings all throughout the world need to come together to help improve this serious situation.  One factor that plays a severe roll in global warming is pollution, which brings me to my next biggest problem in the world.  Pollution is something that has been piling up since before many of us have been born.  The affects of pollution from previous generations and present generations together are beginning to pile up which is affecting our world in a negative way.  Pollution is such a serious problem because it happens each and every day without any remorse.  I bet you can’t even count how many times you were driving on the interstate and saw a piece of food wrapper or drink can fly out of another car’s window, I know I can’t.  With each food wrapper thrown on the ground the Earth’s pollution gets increasingly worse.  Unfortunately, this type of pollution is not the only one.  Water pollution is also another factor of pollution that is causing our world to become a horrible place.  As water pollution increases, marine animal life significantly decreases.  This is unfortunate for the human race since fish and other aquatic animals are major food and energy sources throughout the world.  Along with marine animals other animals are also affected by water pollution.  Most animal’s water sources come from natural springs or other bodies of water.  The more polluted these waters become, the sicker the animals that drink from it become.  Animals are not the only ones directly affected by water pollution.  Another statistic on Wikipedia states, “Water pollution has been the leading worldwide cause of deaths and diseases, and that it accounts for the deaths of more than 14,000 people daily.”  If these numbers don’t seem to scare you, I don’t know what will.  It is very easy for humans to become terminally ill from water pollution because humans consume a substantial amount of water each day.  Without proper filtration, humans directly consume hazardous waste that contaminates the bodies of water throughout the world.  The third problem in the world that I find extremely serious is poverty.  This is a very serious problem that affects many poor countries throughout the world.  Poverty is the lack of vital supplies that contribute to a person’s life including: food, water, shelter and clothing.  Unfortunately, many people do not take the time to help prevent poverty by donating unwanted things to unfortunate people.  The majority of Americans have a closet full of unused clothing  or a pantry full of food that will expire long before even being acknowledged, that could be donated to help a child or family in need.  Also, by contributing just a dollar a day, a person could truly alter the life of someone struggling in another country.  Most people do not realize but every country in the world has some people that suffer due to poverty.  Unfortunately most Americans cannot relate to this problem because they do not normally see the affects in person, but this doesn’t mean the problem doesn’t exist.  Most people only see poverty for what it is on television not from a personal standpoint.

After providing three serious problems in the world, I feel that the one I can do the most about is poverty.  I can contribute personally by volunteering at a food drive center or setting up boxes for unwanted and unused products in various places.   Although I alone cannot single handedly remove poverty from the world, with motivation I can at least improve poverty on a small scale somewhere in the world.  This could also pertain to my career because a Pharmacist is someone who devotes their time to helping others.  I may even be able to set up some boxes at some local Pharmacies in hopes that people will respond by bringing in canned goods and other various products.  I also can bring up this situation at my work and see if other people are interested in helping.

In preparing for class I have read and understand this course’s plagiarism policy.  I fully understand that when writing my blogs and/or any other assignment, I must contribute only my own thoughts and not any one else’s.  It is morally wrong to try and pass someone else’s work off as your own, and I will follow the policy to the fullest.  I feel that this is a very reasonable request because a person’s writing is a way for that individual to express his/herself.  If someone uses another individual’s writing they are not expressing their own ideas, and also not improving their education in any way.  A person that plagiarizes is also taking the credit away from the original author.

This week in class we learned that there is technically no such thing as “The Bible.”  There are two reasons why this statement has been considered true.  The first reason we identified to prove this statement true is that everyone one has a different view and meaning of what the Bible is.  Two different people may have a completely different meaning of what the Bible is to them.  One person may read the Bible to help shape their way of life, while another person may only read the Bible for entertainment purposes.  The second reason that proves there is no such thing as “The Bible” is that there is no actual story that was written from its original author.  Every story in the Bible had been passed down for many generations before it was actually written down on paper.  This shows that the stories may have been altered slightly as they were told from generation to generation.  The only proof the Bible provides is an artifact of what people MIGHT have said.
