My Project

Our planet is getting destroyed and we have to stop it! So do why not just do what is right and learn to save the planet you live in? It won’t just be anything you regret in the future, but you will be proud of yourself for doing it. Make the world a better place to live and here are some tips I think would help to save our planet:

Save energy. Using electricity causes greenhouse gases to pollute our air. To prevent this from happening you can turn off the lights and the television. You can also save electricity by putting the computer in sleep mode when you are done with it.. Power plants give off energy and fossil fuel which causes a great amount of pollution to go into the air. We have power plants because it gives us energy to manufacture goods that are needed. Fossil Fuels are used to meet our energy needs. The less energy we use that will be the less we need the use of power plants. That is a good thing because it won’t pollute our air as much. Power plants produce carbon- dioxide and methane in the air which can cause a problem to the environment.

Change your light bulbs. Replace a 75-watt light bulb with a 20-watt compact fluorescent because you can use your lights for the same amount of time with one third of the energy.

Do a bunch of errands at once. You should do this because cars are carbon-dioxide machines. Carbon-dioxide is bad for the air which only make the ozone worse.

Don’t overdose on frozen foods. It takes up ten times more energy to produce them than to produce fresh food.

Put air in your tires. If you do this you, could save up to 300 pounds of carbon-dioxide from entering our atmosphere for every 10,000 miles you drive.

Drive Hybrids. Hybrid cars reduce pollution, global warming and the U.S. depending on foreign oil. (Foreign oil is oil that you get from another country..) Hybrid cars use less fossil fuel that pollutes the air. They are half electric and half fuel.

Carpool. Instead of four cars going to the same place with only one person in each car, why not all go in one car? You can save gas and money.

Save energy. Using electricity causes greenhouse gases to pollute our air. To prevent this you can turn off the lights and the television. You can also save electricity by putting the computer in sleep mode when you are done with it.

Take a walk. You can also save energy by taking a clean air bus, riding a bike or walking to nearby places. I know it may not sound like anything you want to or have ever done, but it can help reduce the problem of global warming.

Plant a tree. Trees provide oxygen, timber, fruits and renewable fuel. By planting one tree, you could save seven hundred to seven thousand pounds of carbon-dioxide from our atmosphere.

Read and Read. You can look for books on global warming and see how it is harming our planet. Some books are The Inconvenient Truth, Big Ice, Earth’s Future Climate and Greenhouse: The 200-Year Story on Global Warming.

Talk to your science teacher! You can also study the climate and see what is happening to the weather each and every day.

The next time you go shopping for products that use energy, look for the Energy Star label. The Energy Star label items are more efficient. The product you buy should not be oversized because it wastes energy and money. Some Energy Star label products are refrigerators, air conditioners, deep freezers, washing machines, and dishwashers.

Unplug. Your cell phone charger, your computer and your coffee maker I f you are not using them.. Unplugging these uses less electricity. The more electricity you use the more we need power plants which will only put more gasses in the air!

Recycle. Recycling helps to prevent garbage from going into landfills. Landfills take up space for us to plant trees (the space we could be use to provide more oxygen, timber, renewable fuel, and fruits). Plus, with recyclables, we can turn them into useful things.

Look for items that run on natural gas. These items save us from needing to use power plants. Some items are dryers, stoves, and water heaters.

So now you know how and why our planet is getting destroyed and we have to make it our business to fix it. Since we live in this planet we might as well take care of it. You will be proud of yourself for doing it. Together lets make the world a better place to live in and take the tips I listed as a guide to do so!

I like your solution in saving our planet. Seems like the little things can be done to save our planet. But I have a question. How does electricity create greenhouse gases? How exactly does putting air in your tires prevent the carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere? Wouldn’t it just escape the tire and go into the atmosphere anyways? One last question. Suppose I can’t recycle, what am I suppose to do then? Other than that, your solutions to this problem are very simple. I especially like taking walks. Not only are you saving energy from using the car less and less, but you are building up energy from within yourself.

Your project was interesting to me because while I was reading your ideas, it made me think of my family’s personal contribution to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Honestly, I did not know that if a person left something plugged up it would still use the electricity. I thought as long as the person was not using the appliance, specific a charger, no energy is being used. I have a few questions. Normally, where is the Energy Star label found on products? How does eating frozen foods affect energy if a person heats them the same as fresh produce?

I think we as Americans use the most energy of any other country in the world. We are lazy and everybody has to have at least one car. We take a lot of things for granted and that is really bad. I know I sometimes leave lights on unnecessarily and I leave my computer open and waste a lot of energy. I like how you are trying to inform us about the little things that we can do to prevent global warming and make our lives more energy efficient. But i am a little confused on how you are going to expand this to a wider spectrum. Could you describe your project in more detail? Are you going to pass out flyers or have seminars?

Torey, try to get the missing blog entries posted. At this point, Midterm, you should have weeks 1-7 posted.

The planet is definetly a big issue we are dealing with today. You have clearly done your research and have discovered some very interesting things. For example, I had no idea about frozen foods taken more energy to produce than others. My roomate and I are currently stacked with a freezer full of food. Oops! I will definitely have to reconsider that. I also have questions about what exactly are your plans to help the planet? Your tips seem very informative but i’m still not to sure what your project is about.

Your project is very interesting. I liked how you decided post information and tips on what we should do to save our planet. I actually learned a couple of things I did not know, such as how filling your tires with air will lessen the amount of carbon dioxide that enters the atmosphere. I also did not know that leaving things plugged in, even if they are not in use, will still use up electricity. The tips you posted really informed me on how to help save our planet, but I wanted to know a little more detail about your project. I see that you are trying to spread awareness on how to help our planet, but how else can you spread awareness? You should consider passing out flyers, making a facebook or myspace group, or even posting a youtube video.

Scientists say that electricity is produced by burning fossil fuels; natural gas OR coal. By doing this, these fuels release carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere. Putting air in your tire could save up to three hundred pounds of carbon-dioxide from entering our atmosphere for every ten thousand miles you drive. I f you can’t recycle then there are blue bins you can get with the white recycle triangle on it. When your regular trash is picked up, the city will pick that up as well.

  8. tchevis Says:

Thanks volleyball1689. Yes, when something is still plugged up, it keeps using the energy even though you are not using it. Also, when buying appliances, the energy star label will be located on the price tag and some will be also be on the appliance itself. Another thing, when you eat fresh produce, it does not require heating most of the time. Think about it. Do you heat apples, oranges, bananas, lettuce or strawberries? No, not unless you are making a special dish. When you heat foods, the electricity being used is produced by burning fossil fuels; natural gas OR coal. By doing this, these fuels release carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere.

Yes DFOSTER, we do use the most energy out of all of the countries. We are very lazy and take several trips a day even though it may be just down the street. We walk the least and use all kinds of electricity that is not even necessary. My project is going to all the people on my email list. No I will not pass out flyers because that will only cause more electricity to be used. I simply sent the problem of global warming to all of my contacts and gave them solutions to fix the problem. The list of things to stop this problem is very simple and should be very accomplishable.

Torey, this project has to be one of the most comprehensive projects that I have read yet. You have a precise plan of what you want to do and the the ways you plan to help out the Earth. I can tell that you really took your time to discover what you really want to do and because you did this I know that you will get great results from your project! Keep up the good work!
