Week 3: MY PROJECT

1013 words by cnguye11

My project is to reduce, prevent, and eliminate poverty. My plan involves a lot of cooperation and dedication because poverty is not something that should be taken lightly. It is important, however, that the plan may not be a very good one because of many risks involved, but the idea of it would be a good foundation.
To begin solving any kind of problem, one must start by thinking ahead. All it takes is for one person to make a difference. First, that person must be set an example. And how is he or she are suppose to do that? It’s simple. It does not have to be dramatic, but he or she can help those who are directly affected by poverty, by donating any kind of resources, whether it is money donations or can foods. By doing that, he or she can build their own experiences that can be used as a “weapon” to persuade other potential members, so that they can do the same. It can be a friend, a family member, peer, etc. Just so long as to get someone’s attention. It is similar to the idea of “paying it forward”, but not quite. Instead of initially ending poverty by helping the poor to help another poor, one must get someone capable of helping the poor and tell them to do spread it. It is hard to help someone when they can’t even help themselves, but eventually, they will be capable.
When there are enough people that joined the cause, it is time to get more organized. Although individually helping the poor is a good way to go, it is not as effective as an organization like Red Cross. The organization can do many things: collect resources, helping the poor as one unit to have a bigger impact, do research for the next mission, spread the message to key companies that can speed up the process, make a report that shows progression or draw in more members to increase productivity. The ultimate goal of the organization is to teach. Those who know more about the problem can find the solution even before the problem exist. That way, poverty can be eliminated once and for all. It is almost as exciting thinking about it than actually doing it.
Now to be realistic, let us make a scenario. Suppose I have some money that may not have a significant value to me. I can donate it to someone who desperately needs it. What they do with it is not really my concern as of right now, as long as I get the experience of how it felt. Helping the needy always feels good, so I do it again and again. Then I tell my friends and my classmates about it. Hopefully I would get at least 3 to follow the cause, and they have the same feeling I felt. And THEY spread the idea around. It would continually grow until we can get around 50-200 members. Now we can have meetings to discuss the next step; to get more organized. We can start by researching what the poor really need. Perhaps it is new clothes or food. It is realistic enough up to about this point, but let’s take it further into what could happen. With the necessities out of the way, we can help them get an education or get a job. What that does is prevent the poor to get on their own feet and start a new life. The primary goal is to lower the poverty rate as much as possible in the city. After that is done, target the politicians so they can enforce our goals from the ground up, whether it be educating the citizens about the crisis or guide the once poor into being a successful resident. That way, the course of action is sped up, and the poverty rate stays low. With the achievements and the popularity of the success in the city, the organization can be duplicated into another city. The foundation is already set, making it so much easier on the process. In that effect, there are more people willing to work across the country, and the employment rate skyrockets. The country is benefitted by the economy rising, the government keeps more money that is usually spent on welfare to fund other projects, and everyone is happy. All of this can be addressed at the UN and other countries can participate. It becomes a world wide phenomenon in the end. To think that it just started by one person. Just think of all the possibilities!
The alphabet democratized civilization because it made it so much easier to read and write. Before there were cuneiform and hieroglyphics, but because there were so many of them, it was hard to memorize them all. The alphabet uses the combination of both the hieroglyphics and the cuneiform to make a letter that represents the sound of the word. This was revolutionary because now countless number of people can read and write, which means more people are educated and have power. Kings in ancient history are praised through news written, but the bible usually criticizes the government.
The Babe Ruth video clips showed us that at a single event can be interpreted different ways in different time periods. It plays a role in the Bible because many stories took place way before it was written. For example, the Gospel was not written until centuries after Jesus’ time. This means that the actual account of what happened may not have occurred in that specific order. It may also mean that some things may have been left out or added to that event. Some stories from the Bible were traditionally passed down from generation to generation through oral literature, but as we all know some things can be easily changed. A simple phrase can be passed from one person to another person and at the end the phrase the last person has heard is totally different from the original.

I think that this is a very good idea. But as you mentioned it can be really hard to have team work and cooroperation in a big group. Do you think that your project will be easy or do you think it would be hard to bring so many people together for one cause. What kinds of things do you think you could do to make this process an easier one? How do you think you can handle problems and lack of commitment? I wish you luck in your endeavor. I hope you can change the world and if not the world your community because it can use a whole lot of change.

It might be more feasible to join a group addressing poverty right now, like Common Ground, or something else. It’s Midterm Chau, and you really need to get caught up so that you have weeks 1-7 posted. Thanks

I really like your project. By the way your project sounds and the ideas you brought up, it seems that you put a lot of effort and time into it. I really liked your idea about helping others and then in turn they will go and help at least three other people. I feel that your idea will be a very good method in spreading awareness on the impact of poverty in our world. Although your project might be tough to accomplish, I believe that if you follow through with your ideas and set your mind to it, you can have a very successful project. Good luck!!!

I think it is a great idea that you are trying to eliminate poverty. If you donated money that would be wonderful! Now it is true that getting the attention of a politcian is hard but it can be down. Many times in low income areas the public schools are not preforming up to par so maybe you could target improving those as well!
