The project I would like to implement would be called “The Floss Boss.” This is a project that would encourage people to obtain knowledge about having good dental hygiene. The emphasis would be on educating children, youth, and adults. Dentists in the community would be called on to volunteer one Saturday of the month.

The program would provide information on proper dental care.  Good oral hygiene is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean in order to prevent dental problems and bad breath.  This can be done by several methods:  (1) teeth cleaning; (2) tongue cleaning; (3) flossing; and (4) healthy eating habits.

Teeth cleaning is the removal of dental plaque and tartar from teeth in order to prevent cavities, gingivitis, and gum disease. Severe gum disease causes at least one-third of adult tooth loss.  Generally, dentists recommend that teeth be cleaned professionally at least twice per year. Professional cleaning includes tooth scaling, tooth polishing, and, if too much tartar has built up, debridement. This is usually followed by a fluoride treatment for children and adults.  Between cleanings, good oral hygiene is essential for preventing tartar build-up which causes many  problems. This is done by carefully and frequently brushing with a toothbrush and the use of dental floss to prevent accumulation of plaque on the teeth.  The use of dental floss is an important element of the oral hygiene, since it removes the plaque and the decaying food remains stuck between the teeth. This food decay and plaque cause irritation to the gums, allowing the gum tissue to bleed more easily. Flossing is recommended at least once per day, preferably before bedtime, to help prevent receding gums, gum disease, and cavities between the teeth.

Cleaning the tongue as part of the daily oral hygiene is essential, since it removes the bacteria, which coats the tongue and causes bad breath, decaying food particles, fungi, and dead cells from the top area of tongue. Tongue cleaning also removes some of the bacteria species which generate tooth decay and gum problems.

Foods that help muscles and bones also help teeth and gums. Breads and cereals are rich in vitamin B while fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, both of which contribute to healthy gum tissue.  Lean meat, fish, and poultry provide magnesium and zinc for teeth. Some foods may protect against cavities. Fluoride is a primary protector against dental cavities.  Milk and cheese are also rich in calcium and phosphate.  All foods increase saliva production, and since saliva contains buffer chemicals this helps to stabilize the pH to near 7 (neutral) in the mouth. Foods high in fiber may also help to increase the flow of saliva. Sugar-free chewing gum stimulates saliva production, and helps to clean the surface of the teeth.  On the other hand, sugars  are commonly associated with dental cavities. Other carbohydrates, especially cooked starches, e.g. crisps/potato chips, may also damage teeth.  Acids contained in fruit juice, vinegar and soft drinks lower the pH level of the oral cavity which causes the enamel to demineralize.  Another factor which affects the risk of developing cavities is the stickiness of foods. Some foods or sweets may stick to the teeth and so reduce the pH in the mouth for an extended time, particularly if they are sugary.

Examples would be shown of healthy teeth and decayed teeth. Information on the effects of bad dental care would be provided. Written information would also be provided in the form of pamphlets, handouts, books and other printed materials.

Each participant would be given a hands-on demonstration on how to use a toothbrush, mouthwash, and dental floss. Samples of dental floss and free toothbrushes would be given to all participants. The program would be held for 12 months and would be located in the community centers (like the BREC Recreation Centers) all over town.

The alphabet was invented around the 18th century in the era when the West Semitic Hyksos ruled the Egyptian Delta. The alphabet was highly influenced by the Egyptian hieroglyphics. The actual Canaanite alphabet was a mix of cuneiform and Egyptian Pictographs. The Egyptian writing style represented multiple consonant combinations. They never realized they could take apart the consonant combinations and in result create a one letter alphabet. Writing is a necessary in life because it helps keep thoughts visible and preserves it over time so that many generations of people can see what life before them. In Egypt and Mesopotamia reading and writing was a luxury for the scholars. But when the alphabet was created it not went from being only for the rich and scholars to being for ordinary people as well. The alphabet democratized the culture because now not just the priest and the kings but everyone could have a chance to learn the alphabet. It took alphabet writing only a millennium to spread. Writing the alphabet makes cultural values easy to preserve and be able to pass to later generations.

Archeology helps to verify the event in the bible. They actually help people remove doubt in themselves about the bible. Archeologists can show proof to skeptics that some of the event in the bible really did take place. This helps a person believe in the bible using evidence, and not just faith alone. Archaeologists study past cultures through artifacts. They investigate these artifacts to answer questions. An archeologist could help present day people understand how people in the bible lived. Through their extensive research they could show similarities between present and past. Archeologists are very important because with out them our link to the past would be non existent.

This project is a wonderful idea. I did an informative speech on this exact topic during freshman year so I am fully aware of the effects poor dental care can have on someone. My mother, a dentist, has also provided me with much knowledge and always tells me to floss! She said that if you do not floss you are not doing everything in your power to take of your teeth fully. Of course keep brushing, but keep flossing as part of the daily routine as well. Proper dental care starts very early and I believe starting a program such as this is beneficial. Consider going to elementary schools and talking to children about teeth and encouraging them to tell their parents about it as well. Keep brainstorming many ways to get the message across because it would most definitly be a good thing! Good luck. (Is this one of your world problems?)

This a good idea for a project. I think it would be a good idea for me to help you with this because many children as well as adults should be able to get a checkup at least once a year. But, this can’t happen because they do not have health insurance. So i would have a table for them to sign up to receive medicaid. You should also have games and stuff just to spice it up a little so the kids could have stuff that grabs their attention. So, good luck and keep me posted!!

Catchy title! You are correct, dental hygiene is often ignored. Working parents, children in day care, or at home with baby sitters leaves little time to focus on subjects such as this. From your blog, I cannot tell which age group you will be introducing your topic to first, but I would suggest 5 or 6 year olds. It is so important, as you mentioned, that they learn correct dental hygiene. Great approach!

I really like the idea of our project. Good dental hygiene is definately something that is overlooked especially in younger children. I love your idea of providing hands on demonstrations. This will allow people to see the serious effecs of bad dental hygiene. I also really like the fact of having a dentist volunteer his/her time. This will make a much larger impact on the participants. This is a great project, and I think it is something that is really worth learning about!

how is the project going? i am super excited to hear about your project because I have lived with a dentist my entire life (my mother) so I know so much about the topic! keep us posed!! good luck as always :)

Heyy!! I hope everything is going well with the project. I am still in love with the idea. I also love the fact of how much effort you are putting into the project. Good luck!!

This is a wonderful thing to get people to pay attention to. Many people are so busy through the day that they care more about what they are doing than about their teeth. They also eat and chew on things that damage and take enamel of of their teeth. Yes, people should get a check up at least once a year, but what if they cannot afford it or what if they have no insurance to help pay fir this service? Is there a way you can maybe get this to happen? Also, is this one of the world BIGGEST problems? How?
