Week 6-

Project Update: The importance and urgency of my project is becoming more relevant day by day. Ironically, the place where my group plans to volunteer services, The Second Harvesters Food Bank, was noted in the newspaper last week regarding the shortage of food at Second Harvesters as well as similar food banks throughout New Orleans. The economic situation of the world is devastating. It is not only the homeless people that we saw years ago that are foodless. Many middle class and upper class people are loosing their jobs, houses, and basic necessities in life such as food. Many of these people have worked all their lives and some ate at the best of restaurants and then in the matter of one day their life totally changes. Companies such as Federal Express, Government agencies, and 100 year old businesses are either forced to lay off thousands of employees or close their doors. This is serious. I can relate. I know, I was a victim of hurricane Katrina. My house in Chalmette was totally destroyed by 15 feet of water. Neither of my parents got a paycheck for weeks and we had 15 people living in my brother’s apartment in Baton Rouge. We were very appreciative for the food cards that FEMA distributed as aid to the hurricane victims. No one can feel embarrassed when hard times hit them personally. Everyone needs help at some point in time for some reason or another. My family’s need following the hurricane only made me a stronger person who wants to give back the help that I received. It appears that our group project is perfectly timed. The project from my perspective is progressing on schedule. I have been working on a label to be placed on food collection bags that will be distributed around Xavier University. Signs are being designed which will be posted asking for food donations. I want everyone to know that “Xavier cares”. These bags of food will definitely assist the food shortage being acknowledged. Also a date to volunteer at the food bank is in the process of being confirmed. On that day, we will actually sort, distribute donated food, and witness it making a difference in our community. A project that started as an awareness project has actually developed into a response to the calling from our community. Every one needs to sit back and know how fortunate they are. How fortunate to have a home and food. These things are taken for granted until they are suddenly taken away. This project will definitely have a positive impact on our school and our community.

Professional Living: This class and my profession, pharmacy, are directly correlated. The medical profession is all about faith and prayers. Every customer, or patient as we call them, is looking and begging for our help and guidance. They come to us, some in pain and some are looking for advice and counseling. They pray that the medication we supply to them will relieve their pain. They have faith in our advice and direction. We do not only dispense medication, we are there to comfort, counsel, and help cure their ailments. We also try to work with them and their insurance companies so that they can get their medications as cheaply as possible to avoid financial burdens. We do the best to help the people in our community. Every one of our patients is different. Some have different religious beliefs, different customs, different cultural beliefs, and I will need to respect their beliefs even if they are different from my own. The compassion that I display will earn me the respect, trust, and faith from my patients. This class is helping me see the differences.

Feminist Criticism: Feminist criticism is definitely a useful tool because it shows how women are thought of as property and do not have rights or respect in the patriarchal society. It is a useful tool when looking at the Bible because the Bible was created by men for men. The Bible relays negative viewpoints about women to men. Men are given the perception that women are evil and not to be trusted. Since the Bible is such a holy and sacred document, this belief was upheld. Feminist Criticism is an extraordinary tool to disclose all of the negative perceptions of women and be able to argue and bring to light the positive qualities and worth of women.

Midterm: “How did I do on my Midterm?” This is a very disturbing topic. I am extremely disappointed with my midterm grade. I have been raised as a loyal and faithful Christian my entire life, so religion has been a daily part of my life. I spent an extensive amount of time to complete my study guide so that I could utilize it as a study tool. I felt very prepared for the midterm, but my grade does not reflect the time and effort that I spend preparing. I do not think that repeating definitions or who said what to whom in what book of the Bible totally displays the depth of your knowledge. I look at religion as a whole concept. I think I would have displayed my understanding of the material more positively in an essay format test. I prefer a format where I am told the quote and then asked how or why it was relevant to me or to God. Some sort of format that enables me to express myself and disclose my knowledge of the subject matter. Since we only have a midterm and final, this is very frustrating to me. If the format of the final is going to be the same as the midterm, then I need to change my study strategy from trying to develop a depth of the material to more of a memorization process. Although a retake of the test is optional, I do not see myself doing any better on a retake. It will just be other words and other quotes. It just was not what I expected. I’m just venting because I am disappointed ! Either way, I am not in a comfortable position at this time.
