Honestly, I haven’t begun to implement my project. It is a work in progress, very slow progress. Recently, I started thinking that I was making this too big and it would be too much for me to handle, and it is. However, I think it would benefit others more than it would hurt me. I’m going to stick with it for the most part, but I may cut back on a few things. Tonight, I’ll take a tiny step to begin a major effort. I will create an awareness group on facebook and create the flyers that will be distributed throughout Xavier and the New Orleans area. Tomorrow, I’ll go to Kinko’s and make copies. Hopefully someone wants to chip in on the cost. If not, I’ll be able to handle it. I’m debating on whether I should extend this effort to a few local schools or just one, which will be McMain. Over the Easter break, Katey, Jennifer, and I will volunteer at Second Harvesters doing whatever needs to be done. Hopefully, this weekend we [Katey, Jennifer, and I] can get together and make the food stop. By, next week we can have them in place ready for food collection. Currently, there isn’t a deadline on the Xavier Cares effort, but it would be great if we can bring the food to Second Harvesters the days we volunteer. This is the plan that I will follow in implementing my project.
Biblical studies do not directly pertain to my future profession, pharmacy. However, they have an indirect correlation. The information and stories presented in this class would help me better myself and build a relationship between myself and the patient. In becoming a better person, just as the Babylonians used the Enuma Elish, I can use biblical stories to help me survive and get a handle on life. If I was having a difficult time trying to find an answer to one of life’s many problems, I could find a biblical story we discussed and look at how the character(s) in the story handled it. For example, if I was a pharmacy technician and my colleague, who was also a pharmacy technician, had just been promoted to head pharmacist, I may be a little jealous. To solve this issue, I might look at the Jacob and Esau story to see how they handle their situation. This may prevent any evil actions that stem from jealousy and it may also help me get over the jealousy. I could use biblical studies to help me as a person. If something went on at home, I might flip to a biblical story that parallels to mine and see how this situation was handled. Doing that may prevent me from taking my problems to work and having them affect my job. It would also help build my character. As for building a relationship with patients, I could just look at the basics of this class and apply them. Using one of the criticisms, I may be able to analyze a colleague’s or patient’s personality and understand why they act a particular way. I could also use a biblical story to do this and to validate social order, as the Babylonians did. Many teens may come into the pharmacy for the Plan B pill and if I were a pro choice Christian, I could look at a biblical story or text and understand why; it is God’s will for them to live this way. The various biblical stories and criticisms we discuss in class may help me on a day to day basis in my future profession.
Feminist criticism is a useful tool for two major reasons. The first reason is that feminist criticism seeks to expose strategies men use to explain the rightful control over women. One strategy men use is violence. Men perform violence on women to show that they are afraid of becoming powerless. They blame women by saying they brought his upon themselves. The second reason feminist criticism is a useful tool is because it tries to understand how and why women accept subordinate positions. The story of Sleeping Beauty is used to explain this. This story suggests that woman wait around for their Prince Charming to come and sweep them off their feet and provide their every need. Marrying this man will give her a higher status of the social ladder since he comes with such a high status. This woman will always be submissive to him in order to keep her social status. In accordance with the Bible, feminist criticism is a useful tool because it is an influential book in our society and it is credited for being responsible for women’s role. Since the Bible was made for men and by men, it always gives women a negative role. In the Bible, women are displayed as property, poor, or using sexuality to get what they want. This applies to the two reasons previously stated. Looking at the Bible, feminist critics may look at the story of Ruth to see why women accept subordinate positions.
I received a 92 on the midterm. I think all my continuous studying paid off. The place I messed up on was the biblical quotes. Though I knew it would be on the test, I didn’t know how to study for it. I knew the popular quotes like “Am I my brother’s keeper?” and “Cursed be Canaan.” Of course, they weren’t on the test. I tried memorizing some of the less obvious quotes from Dummies, but I didn’t get too far. So, when I tried working through the quotes on the test, I made through some of them, about 2, and I knew bits and pieces of the others. Other than the quotes and the stupid mistake I made on one of the terms, the midterm was fairly easy. As a midterm grade, I received a B; maybe because I wasn’t completely caught up on my blogs. At the end of the semester, I should be fine.
