Dear Dr. Norman C. Francis,

My name is Yaesha Joseph, and I am currently a sophomore here at Xavier University. In my theology class, I was asked to come up with three huge problems in the world, write about them, and come up with a project to help change those problems. I thought about different world problems, but one of the biggest problems in the world today is students’ lack of enthusiasm in education. I feel that lack of enthusiasm in education is hurting the world tremendously. Many students either do not care about education or they are not aware of how important education is to succeed in life. I feel that we as a community need to get together and come up with a way to reach the students.  Xavier University of Louisiana is a well respected college all over the United States. When people here the name Xavier University of Louisiana, they automatically think greatness and success, so I feel that we need to come up with different programs explaining to children the importance of education. I think it would be great for us to have a program hosted by Xavier students of various classifications explaining the importance of education and how learning can be a very fun thing. Also we could get Xavier students who came from a low income household to explain that not having a lot of money should not get in the way of your education. We need to stress that in order to be a successful person in this world, a solid and strong education is necessary.

I also feel that we  need to also talk about sex and teenage pregnancies and how that is not the route to take. We could get Xavier students who have children to tell their story and persuade the children to not make the mistake they made. Also, the  Xavier students who have children could explain to the teenagers that are already parents that they can still go to college and succeed at whatever it is they want to do.

I think that doing something like this would really be a great thing for Xavier Univeristy to do. As I have already said, Xavier University of Louisiana is very respected and for us to do something like this would be wonderful. I just think it is time that we do something to lower the dropout rate & teeange pregnancies.

Sincerely,

Yaesha Joseph

Dear Mayor Ray Nagin,

I am a student who attends Xavier Univeristy of Lousiana. I was given an assignment for my theology to come up with some world problems that I think are the biggest. The problems I came up with are students’ lack of enthusiasm for education and teenage pregnancies. I feel that these are two huge problems that are not only affecting our world but New Orleans as well. I think it is time that the community comes together and try to come up with something that will slow these rates.

I think that we first need to educate the parents about the importance of getting a solid and strong education. If we make sure that the parents of the children understand the importance, they will encourage their children to do as well as possible in school. Also, the parents might start to make more of an effort to make sure that their children’s homework and studying has been done before doing other activities such as playing video games or watching television. Children’s enthusiasm about school first comes from the household. If the importance of education is not being brought to their attention at home, then they will not think it is important. I hope that the community can up with a plan to help these troubled students.

Thanks,

Yaesha Joseph

Dear Governor Bobby Jindal,

I am a sophomore at Xavier Univeristy of Louisiana. In my theology class I was asked to think about all of the problems in the world today and choose three that I felt were the most important. I came up with students’ lack of enthusiasm when it comes to education. Another problem I came up with is the high rate of teenage pregnancies. I feel that we as a community need to get together and do something about these problems.

Too many teenagers are dropping out of high school or just doing enough to get by. We need to explain to the children the importance of getting a good education. We need to show them that one cannot be a successful person without an education. I think that these are two problems that have been overlooked for many years and it is time to address it. Afterall, children are our future. We need to ask ourselves what will the world be like if we just let teenagers continue to drop out of school and become young parents living off of the government. These are two problems that can definitely taint the progression of not only our community, but also our Nation.

Thanks,

Yaesha Joseph

 Dear President Obama,

Hello President Obama, my name is Yaesha Joseph, and I am a student at Xavier University of Louisiana. I was asked to think of three problems in the world and come up with a project to help. One of the biggest problems, in my opinion, is children’s lack of enthusiasm about school. Too many of our children are dropping out of school and becoming teenage parents. We need to get together and come up with a plan that will change children’s outlook on education. We need to explain to children exactly why they are in school. Without an education children cannot go very far in life. In the past, just getting a high school diploma was enough, but now we have to surpass that. A college degree is necessary to become that successful individual everyone wants their child to be.

Thanks,

Yaesha Joseph

God’s house tells us that God is a very powerful person. His house was absolutely beautiful. It was built of gold. God’s house was was made of us, his people. This tells us that we are a part of God, and he is a part of us.

The idea of the “promised land” is very problematic. Moses worked really hard to be obedient to God. He sacrificed a lot to please God and in the end he is not allowed to enter the “promised land” with his people. God tells Moses to go pray to a rock and the rock will produce water. Instead of doing this Moses kicks the rock and this upsets God. He thinks of this has Moses being disobedient and disrespectful. Because of this God tells Moses that he is not able to enter the “promise land.”

African American criticism can be and is very useful tool to Bible scholars. African American criticism shows how the bible portrayed  the African culture. This tool can help Bible scholars see the bible from an African’s point of view. The African American criticism can help others see the bible from the African’s point of view.
