There are many methods of analyzing biblical text. Source criticism involves identifying the sources that an author may have used in writing a certain document. Textual criticism involves the identification and editing of certain manuscripts.

Tobit is the story of an Israelite who was captured and exiled to Ninevah. Tobit was a rebel captive that was not easily tamed. While Tobit was in Assyrians captive he disobeyed the Assyrian King. The Assyrian king orders Tobit to burry all the dead which was basically individuals who he felt were disposable. While Tobit is suppose to be burying the dead he falls asleep. When he wakes up he realizes that he is blind. Tobit realizes that he has lost something very important to him. After he thinks about what he has lost he has thoughts of dying. A woman by the name of Sarah wants to also take her life but she is from the land of Media. Sarah is depressed for a different reason than Tobit. Sarah has been married seven times. Each time Sarah has been wed an evil source appears and takes the life of each of her husbands. The demon’s named is Asmodeous. He kills the husband of Sarah on their wedding night. Sarah has never conceived a child and is still a virgin after being married seven times.  God sends an angel to help Tobit and Sarah heal. The name of the healing angel is Raphael. Tobias, Tobit’s son is sent to Media the home land of Sarah to collect some money from a man that owes his father. Raphael goes with Tobias to Media. Raphael takes the form of a man so that he can befriend Tobias. During his journey Tobias has an encounter with a giant fish and is almost made into fish bait. Luckily Tobias escapes from the fish. Tobias kills manages to kill the fish. Sarah and Tobit meet and began to really like each other. Sarah and Tobit meet and marry soon after. They marry even though Tobias has knowledge of the demon that has killed each of her husbands on their wedding night. Raphael tells Tobias in order to save his father and their marriage that he must burn the heart and liver in order to keep Asmodeous away. Tobias and Raphael return to Ninevah with Tobit’s debt. Tobit rubs the fish’s gall bladder into his eyes and this allows him to see again. In my opinion there are many lessons in this story. The main lesson would probably be that even though things are bad they can always get worse, but when things are bad just stick it through and God will help you.

Some individuals might consider Maccabees to be heroic because he fights against the king. The king that Maccabees fought is King Antioch. He is not a good king. King Antioch does several things that are displeasing. First he makes circumcision illegal. Then he worships false gods in his temple. Everyone was afraid to go against King Antioch. Maccabees was the first of all the people to defy King Antioch. All the towns’ people were shocked to see that Maccabees successfully defeated King Antioch. Maccabees is considered a hero because he was the only person to stand up and defeat King Antioch.
