Week 11- Blog

Today is Monday, April 13, 2009, to date no one has commented on my project. I will revisit this blog at a later date when I can respond to the comments.

April 21, 2009:

  1. Thank you Mildred for commenting on my project. I am glad that you noticed that my project was involving Xavier students and felt that it was a good idea. I wanted the help to begin at Xavier so that is why I used the slogan of “Xavier Cares”. I am also glad that you felt that the boxes asking for food donations were placed in the perfect areas. That proves that you saw them and participated in my project. I appreciate your suggestion about placing a box at Xavier South. Thanks for the input!
  2. Joannie, I appreciate your comment commending my idea to volunteer at Second Harvesters Food Bank. You were very perceptive to notice that the timing of our service was right before Easter. You are also right, I want our community to know that “Xavier Cares”.
  3. Leander, thanks for realizing that this project will truly help the community. You are correct, no one should have to live a life of hunger. Thanks for the positive feedback.
  4. Melissa, you have noticed everything about the project that we hoped of everyone. You saw the collection boxes and paid extra attention to the “stop” signs. From your comment, it appears that the “stop” signs worked. Our project also had the effect that we hoped it would, that you want to get involved and help. That is awesome! Second Harvesters Food Bank is a wonderful place. It is so rewarding to volunteer at a place like this knowing that you are making a difference. Thanks so much.
  5. Andrew, thanks for supporting the same cause as we are. You are correct, hunger is a huge problem. I am glad that you chose the same problem, that way we had a double presence supporting and educating Xavier about hunger. Good luck with your project also.

I would like to thank everyone who commented on our project. We sincerely took this project to heart. It is very sad that there are so many people that do not have food to eat. It is very brave for someone to stand on a street corner and beg for food, but no one should have to do that. America is a wealthy country so there is absolutely no reason why people are dying every minute in America from hunger. When presenting a idea or project, you must first capture the audience’s attention. We felt that the bright red boxes with bold “stop” signs would accomplish this. Once you have their attention, a message or purpose must be relayed. We distributed flyer around the campus and posted flyers on our boxes that educated Xavier with the cruel and hard facts about hunger. The statistics of hunger are shocking. How can the government and affluent individuals allow the deaths of these staring people? With the many other problems that the world is facing today, I guess the problem of hunger is shadowed by the other issues. Hunger causes death, so we need to help these people. When I say “we” need to help these hungry people I mean you, me, the city, the state, and America needs to help these people. I was surprised that no one mentioned or commented about the brown paper bags with a stop sign on them that were provided on the collection boxes. These bags were offered as a reminder to bring in can goods. I felt that it make it very convenient to bring home the bag, fill it with can goods, and then drop the filled bag into one of the collection boxes placed around Xavier. If monetary donations or can goods are donated but never reach the hungry people is not solving the problem. This is why I decided that we need to bring this food to a place that actually distributes the food to the people who really need it. Second Harvesters Food Bank is an awesome place. They strive to get donated food packaged and to the hungry people. We wanted to make a difference in our community as a result of this assignment. We were successful. We participated in packaging food that was to be delivered to households for the Easter holiday. We realized how fortunate we were and that our community needs our help. Lastly, we wanted Xavier students to realize that places like Second Harvesters exist and welcome volunteers to help them accomplish their and our goal—to feed the hungry people. Our group knew from day one that we would not solve the world problem of hunger, but we did definitely Xavier and we did make a difference in our community and the world.

What is the difference between source and textual criticism?

The aim of textual criticism is to find errors in copied texts. As texts are copied over and over again for centuries, the critics are trying to find errors in the copied works. This critic wants the “original” form of the text.

The source critics’ goal is to identify the correct source.

Summarize Tobit, and what is the main lesson of this story?

Tobit is a hard working charitable man. He is faithful and wants to do the right things. He experiences many struggles and obstacles. First, Tobit goes blind as a result of a bird pooping in his eye. Secondly, he recalls his wealth and sends his son to collect on the loan. In the end, Tobit’s son returns with the money, a bride, and also a cure for his father’s ailment. We can relate to Tobit because he is an average, hard working person. Although the challenges, struggles, and dangers continue, Tobit conquers them. The main lesson of the story is to have patience in suffering.
