Better Days (Week 9)

Well, my project is getting better now. I finally feel like that I am once in control of my project and I am ready to diligently work. Well I have finally solved my issue with the mentoring kids. I am going to hold a seminar during church on Sunday for the children. I will talk to them about the importance of an education and the effects that an education will have on their lives. The seminar will be held May 3, 2009. The reason why I chose this date is because finals are coming up and I know that myself and everyone will be busy also because every first Sunday at our church is deemed “Children’s Sunday” because we put children first; they are our future. Even though this date is after the class is over, I do plan to carry out the seminar. This is a cause that is near and dear to my heart so I am doing all that I can to make this project work.
I also plan to do some tutoring in the summer, which is great because my church also has vacation bible school during the summer, so this will coincide with that fine. I feel that the children will also be most receptive to help in the summer. Also, the book drive is going great. I have collected 27 books and it is looking like I will be collecting even more books. I have set up a goal of 100 hundred books by May 31. I like to call this part “A 100 books in 100 days.” Actually, I truly don’t know how many days this project has been going on, but I do like the ring of the name; it rolls off of the tongue. Also, I came up with the idea of printing the qualifications that the books must meet and handed out. I have also created flyers advertising the book drive and the seminar. Both flyers have been handed out at Truman middle School (my mother’s workplace), at my church, and eventually at Xavier. I will continue to advertise throughout the summer, since my project will not stop anytime soon. Some people have said that I need to come up with a facebook group, but I have decided not to do so. I feel that most people will ignore the request of the group and those that do accept the group will probably not take the time to read it and truly grasp the concept of what I am trying to do. I can say this because sometimes I join groups but I truly don’t know what they are about. The other day I was going through all the groups I had joined and I saw this group titled “The Black Woman: My Slaves.” I looked at the group at it was a group about this one guy who thought all black women were lesser to him. I couldn’t believe that I was a part of such a group! Needless to say I had dropped my membership from this group. But, It just proves that I was blindly adding groups just because they had requested me and I am sure that others will do the same.
The key to Deuteronominian History is Deuteronomy 17:14-21. In these verses, the role of the king in laid out and specified. It says that a king should not be a stranger but of their own brethren; a king should be someone that they know and trust. Also, the king should not be greedy, as it says in the verses that the king should not have multiple wives or an excessive amount of silver and gold. But, the most important part of this is that the king should keep the law at his side and abide by the law for all of his days. Throughout the Bible, It has been known that the king is above the law, in fact he makes the laws. However, with Deuteronomy it says that even though the king has a great role, the king is nonetheless a slave to the law. If he follows this law, then his life may prosper.
I do not think that George Bush is a not good example of the Deuteronomian king. He didn’t strike me as the type of president that truly sacrificed himself for his country. He seemed like he just wanted to help himself and people who are like him. I remembered with hurricane Katrina how he pretty much abandoned the city and left us to fend for our selves. Yet, when Florida (who his brother Jeb Bush was governor of) experienced a hurricane, FEMA, the Red Cross, and other types of relief were available vey fast. I don’t know why he really didn’t care for the city, since the port is a valuable resource to the American economy; maybe it was because of nepotism or maybe he really doesn’t care about black people. No matter the reason, this goes against the idealistic Deuteronomian king.
The worst thing that David was stealing the wife of Uriah, Bathsheba. Uriah was a faithful good soldier of David, yet he stole his wife for his own personal gain. While his country was at war, David sent Uriah to a spot in a battle where David knew he would be killed. After Uriah was killed, David took Bathsheba as his own wife. There was justification as to why David did this; David did this just for his own personal gain.
As the navel is set in the centre of the human body,
so is the land of Israel the navel of the world…
situated in the centre of the world,
and Jerusalem in the centre of the land of Israel,
and the sanctuary in the centre of Jerusalem,
and the holy place in the centre of the sanctuary,
and the ark in the centre of the holy place,
and the foundation stone before the holy place,
because from it the world was founded.”
Midrash Tanchuma, Qedoshim
This quote best reflects what the Jerusalem temple meant to the people of Jerusalem. This temple was the center to these people’s lifestyle. It was the site where God was suppose to dwell, a kind of enhancement of the Ark of the Covenant The purpose of these temple were to unify God with his people and to enable a stronger connection with God.. The First and Second temple were constructed under Solomon’s rule and were destroyed around 586 BCE by the Babylonians. Even today, people are trying to rebuild the Temple. Some people feel that the has no relevance to today’s people. In contrast, according to the Temple institute, “Every prophet of Israel, without exception, prophesized that the Temple would be rebuilt, ushering in a new era of universal harmony and peace unparalleled in the history of man. Thus, the “movement” to rebuild the Holy Temple is not new. It was born almost 2,000 years ago, at the moment of the Second Temple’s destruction. For when the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, it was the soul of Jewish people… and the entire world… as it will be once again.” These people believe that by the temple being rebuilt, it will fulfill the prophecy of greatness that the people of Jerusalem are entitled to.

Hey Bree thats great that you have found a way to implement your project as well as having church involved. The concern that you have for the children to help them with education and also being a mentor is great. The educational level that children are aiming for today is not where it should be paying close concern to african american children who need the most help and need a positive role model. Great Job!!!!!!

I really like the idea of your project and it’s good to see that it is coming along well. I think it is a great idea that you will continue implementing your project evn after this class is over. In addition, I think that you have done a great job. However, I think that you should expand the project in the future to reach kids outside of your church. Outstanding Job!

I hope that you are successful in getting your books collected and reaching your goal. Education is so important in this day and age and I am glad that you are trying to teach that to young kids. I think your church is a good first place to start because you kind of already know the children there so they will probably be a lot more receptive to you and what you are saying.

I am glad to hear that your project is going well. I really like your idea about holding a seminar to educate children about the importance of education. You are doing something great for these kids and I am sure these kids they benefit from your seminar. Good job!
