Evaluating this course goal:
1. Give students a level of expertise in the discipline of biblical studies. When I registered for this class I did not know anything about the bible and the stories written in the bible. honestly the only story I knew was about noah’s ark and the adam and eve story. Also I did not know that the bible was separated into books and there were different writers. After taking this class I learned that the bible is divided into different books rather than just a bunch of stories.
2. Provide the tools to read the Bible in an academic and critical manner. This class does provide the tools to read the bible in an acedemis and critical matter. By taking this class, I learned the many different types of criticism and also the different ways different people interpret a verse. Learning the different criticisms make you look at certain stories in the bible a different way.
3. Improve student’s ability to effectively communicate and to write clearly matters involving critical thinking. Being in this class require you to post blogs, and by doing so it helps everyone with their communicating skills. I am not really good at writing and communicating with people through writing and by having to write these blogs I am slowly getting better at it.
4. Improve the world. We had to come up with a project to improve the world this semester and my project was to reduce underage drinking. With me having meetings and speaking to minors about the effects of alcohol and the problems related to alcohol it kind of make them think twice about having a drink when they are offered one. So it’s a good thing I am trying to achieve and it will definitely change the world. One less irresponsible person drinking behind the wheel is definitely an improvement.
The best part of this class was the lectures. I enjoyed going to class because everyday we actually learned something new and interesting. This class wasn’t a typical lecture class where all we do is just sit there and listen to the teacher lecture. Honestly, when I registered for this class I thought it would be hard for me to pay attention to the instructor lecture about the bible for over an hour. With Dr. Homan relating the stories of the bible to the everyday stuff we see, it makes it more interesting and easier for many to stay on track with the subject and understand the point of the topic for that day. The one thing that I didn’t like about this class was the blogs. We had to blog 1000 words every week, but it wasn’t checked every week. By giving us so much freedom with this blog, it really makes us slackers and that is definitely not a good thing. Being that Xavier university is a catholic university I strongly believe that this class should be a core curriculum. People should know about the bible, also most religion have to start out somewhere, and by taking a biblical studies class, you just might find out where exactly your religion started.
Do you agree with Paul or James in the Faith Vs. Works conflict? Honestly, I believe that a person need to have both faith and works. It is easier for someone to say that they believe in God, anyone can say anything. By
