The Ode to Theology Class!!!! (The end is finally here)

Provide the tools to read the Bible in an academic and critical manner:

The tools that are need to read the bible in my opinion is each individual’s free will of beliefs and ability to distinguish the difference between lies and the truth. Upon coming into this class I felt that it would be a total different experience. I have noticed that things in the bible are contradictory and I never felt the courage to question or go against what was printed in the bible. Now after 14 weeks of reading and deciphering the bible I have more confidence to question things I feel are not right. I realize that things that are written in the bible by men for men and to show the men should be dominate.

Give students a level of expertise in the discipline of biblical studies:

The blogs that we write weekly incorporate the things that we have learned throughout the week. By writing about the topics that we discussed in class I am have to make sure that I have a clear and decisive grasp of the material. I do this even if it requires more research and rereading the material. It required a lot of discipline to read and understand the stories in the bible as well as the readings that were required. This class if not one to be taken lightly or for granted, it is just as strenuous as a science or math course.

Improve student’s ability to effectively communicate and to write clearly matters involving critical thinking:

I feel that I am a better writer after completely these blogs weekly. It shocks me that I was able to write without rambling or using outside sources to state my point. The class allowed freedom to communicate what we learned and how to perceive the information that was taught. Things could have been much different there we just memorize a bunch or bible quotes and be taught what you believed that these texts stated. The Bible is a difficult text to interoperate. To learn how to read such difficult text shows a level of higher learning standings. When we demonstrate that we can not only read and interoperate the Bible but also write an effective blog about what we learned it shows an increased level of thinking and ability to communicate through writing.

Improve the world

Each individual student was given the task to implement a project that will help to improve what WE thought was a major concern in the world as well as our society. Even though most of our projects will not be fully implemented until we are out of our theology 1120 class we have began a movement that can be the start of a great beginning. I believe that through my teachings and learning’s I was able to formulate a project that will help improve the world. My project was to help eliminate the growing concern of poverty in New Orleans as well as the world. Implementing this project has mad me grow as well. I have something to do with my time that I can be proud of and happy to dedicate my time to, besides taking a nap when I get out of class. Even though I was already involved with this organization before taking this class I would have never though to take it national. However, through my knowledge in this class and critical thinking I now have a project that can even possible help our economy with future jobs.

Do you agree with James or Paul?

I agree with Paul. Faith is very important regardless of the religion. Faith is needed to help keep individuals grounded and help with the code of ethics. Faith lets us know that we are only human and capable of being imperfect and capable of committing sin. Faith lets us know that there is a supreme being or someone who started it all.

The best part of this class was just being taught by Dr. Horman. His crazy antics and ways of relating the material to us was awesome. I was taught about things that I use to take lightly and just ignore. I was also given instruction on how to help improve the world. Most of us want to help improve the world and don’t actually take the first step to do so and this class gave us extra boost we needed to help our nation and make a better future for future generations. The worst part of this class would have to be the blogs. Even though it helps us illustrate our knowledge of the subject it is just a lot to keep up with. I know that 1000 words a week should be nothing for a college student. I just think that these blogs on top of every other class and family situations can be a bit overwhelming. I do think that this class should be a part of Xavier’s core curriculum for two major reasons. The first is because I think the class offers more than just information on the bible but also on life today. It also gets students thinking about way to improve the world as we see it. The second reason is that by attending a catholic school we should learn how to properly interoperate the Bible. When I attended Dillard University I also had to take a mandatory class called Chapel where we discussed our majors and bible teachings related to our majors. Okay my math might be a little off because I don’t think that I found all my blogs in between everyone else’s but I came up with an approximate number. After writing approximately 16,129 words this blog this semester, I now believe that ten page papers are a breeze and Dr. Horman is crazy for putting this as part of the core curriculum. Now but honestly I think that I have a new respect for my self by dedicating the time and effort to complete this task. I am also happy that through this semester I gained a new project that can actually help do the world some good.

THANKS DR. HORMAN YOU WERE TRULY A REMARKABLE TEACHER BUT I AM SOOO GLAD TO BE FINISHED WITH THESE BLOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!
