Week 08: Letters

1704 words by aminias

Dear Abouna Youstos,

I am doing an assignment for my theology class about a major problem the world is facing today.  There are many severe problems that the world is going through at this very moment, but the one that bothers me the most is world hunger. There are innocent children and people out there suffering because there is not enough money to provide for all of them. Statistics say that every 3.6 seconds a child dies because of world hunger. How many times have you thrown away your plate with food still left over? That little bite can satisfy a soul from hunger. Without a voice and action to go along with it no one will realize the matter concerning world hunger. Do you know how many individuals go to bed hungry? We can stand up and end this extreme problem. There are many ways to stop world hunger but we not only need to hear the desire of people wanting to help, we need to put action into those words. We can put up a start a fund raiser and a can food drive at our Church to help those who are suffering. It will not put an end to this problem,  but it is a start.

Sincerely,

Andrew Minias

Dear Abba Youssef,

My name is Andrew Minias and I am student at Xavier University. I am sure you remember me from Saint Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church of New Orleans.  I am writing to your Grace to inform you that I am taking a Theology class at Xavier University, in which I have to create a project that benefits the world. I chose to do my project on the problem of world hunger. World hunger is an issue that involves people’s health and well-being. Many people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition. I feel that I need to help these people. I am asking your Grace if you can get the Coptic Orthodox diocese of the Southern United States to donate a very small percentage of money to help needy people around the world.

Sincerely,

Andrew Minias

Dear Your Holiness Pope Shenouda III,

Hi, my name is Andrew Minias. I attend St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Church in New Orleans, LA.  I am currently enrolled in a theology course at Xavier University of Louisiana and one of my assignments is to write a letter to Your Holiness about a major problem that the world is facing today.  The first thing that came into mind was world hunger.  World hunger seems to be a growing epidemic. When you think about it how many times do finish our dinner, then just go ahead and throw away our food. It’s become something that is just downright depressing. I feel that life shouldn’t be like this and we shouldn’t have kids crying throughout the world due to the fact that there is no food to feed them. There should be some way that people could not end up hungry. I am asking Your Holiness if you can help me start a worldwide fundraiser. We can spread it to all Coptic Communities throughout the world. By doing this, you will be helping a lot of people around the world and many of these people will be very thankful for your help. I would greatly appreciate it if you are able to do this.

Sincerely,

Andrew Minias

Dear President Obama,

My name is Andrew Minias and I am currently enrolled in a theology class at Xavier University of Louisiana. We were asked to write a letter to you about a major problem the world is facing today. The first thing that came into my mind was world hunger. Do you know how many people are dying because of world hunger at this very moment? Statistics say that around every 5 seconds there is a person who dies because of hunger. According to the United Nations, there are about twenty five thousand people that die every day of this world problem. Many people either do not care about the situation or they may not be aware of it. I ask you today if you may speak up about this problem, because you have a bigger voice than I do. People are suffering because of starvation and we are just passing them by. There are many things that play a role in terms of world hunger. I want to end this world problem once and for all. Please help me inform our community of this matter, so that many may realize what is happening and we can then put words into action.

Sincerely,

Andrew Minias

I chose to write a letter to Abouna Youstos, because he is my priest and I know that he will be willing to help. I chose to write to Abba Youssef, because he is the Bishop and the person in charge of the Coptic Orthodox Diocese of the Southern United States, which means that he has a lot of authority. I also wrote to the Coptic Orthodox Pope, Abba Shenouda III because I feel he has the most influence on Coptic communities throughout the world. Finally, I chose to write to President Barack Obama because he is the president, which means that he has a lot of authority and power.

God’s house tells us that God is all-powerful. A Church is God’s house and God’s people is a Church. There are hundreds and thousands of Churches throughout the world, which means that God is worshiped by millions of people. The idea of the “Promised land” is extremely problematic. God reserved the Promised land for the Israelites, but how is it promised if Moses and the Israelites cannot enter it? The Israelites cannot enter the Promised  land for 40 years, because they were disobedient to God. Also, Moses cannot enter the Promised land, because he displeased God by not listening to him. African American criticism focus on how African Americans have influenced certain texts. African American criticism allows us to analyze the Bible through an African American perspective.

  1. Dr. Michael Homan Says:

I liked that your letters were not to Obama for a change. Did you hear back?

  2. aminias Says:

I heard back from my priest. He told me he would be willing to help me with my can food drive. I also heard back from Abba Youssef. He told me when he comes to visit New Orleans this summer he would be more than happy to sit down with me and discuss what we can do. He is a very busy man and he travels to over 50 Churches. He visits every Church in the Southern Diocese once each year. This year he is coming to our Church in June so he will speak with me then.
