Week 9: Project in Action

My project definitely took a different term as the semester slowly started slipping away. I had originally planned to get involved with an organization that promoted giving people an animal and teaching them how to care for it as a way to learn to feed themselves. Unfortunately no local events are set up currently in this area. And to be realistic, I do not have the cash, time, or energy to be traveling the country to volunteer for them right now. I definitely want to stay in touch with this organization as they grow and be involved and promote their cause in the future. Furthermore, I also plan to work a bunch this summer and have decided that 5% of my check would be donated to them. It might not be much but at least it would be something!

Also, I had planned to make YouTube videos about nutrition but that too didn’t happen! Let me be honest, I really haven’t done much as far as healthy living goes as benefits to change the world other than what I do in my house on a daily basis.

I did however go back to Baton Rouge over easter and donate my time at the local Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. I have been involved with them since I was in elementary school and always find it satisfying to donate my time there. I spent the morning there sorting donated food into different categories such as canned items, beverages, dry food, etc. (and also making sure that no expired/close to expired or tampered food had been donated). It is disheartening to have to throw some food away that is donated but of course you cannot give out rotten food even to poor people. But, I do have to say, the ratio of food that is actually used as compared to what is thrown away is tremendous. There is very little wasted food that comes into that place which shows me that it is an efficiently run institution. It truly is amazing the amount of food that is donated to, stored, and distributed by this food bank. I asked the people I was working with where all this food actually goes. I was sort of naive and thought that it was just delivered to people daily for regular consumer use. However I found out that this food goes to many different organizations like local soup kitchens, shelters, food pantries, peoples houses, and even some people come directly to the food bank asking for some food. The set up at the food bank is amazing. Its basically a huge warehouse with just tons and tons of food that is sorted, packed, and brought to whereever it needs to go. It really is aweinspiring to see such a place who’s main objective is to give food to people in need.

The Deuteronomistic Historian says that a good king is one that follows the law code written by Moses in the book of Deuteronomy. This was called the Deuteronomic Law Code which encompasses the idea that a good king makes sure that his kingdom follows this law code. A central belief in this law code is the idea of one god and belief in this one god. There would be special emphasis in ensuring that no other gods were followed in this king’s kingdom. This good king also would have to make sure that all laws set forth by Moses were practiced by the people and that no one was disobeying these law codes. This is the ultimate mixing of church and state where a king’s whole philosophy focuses around the laws of a religion.

I’m not sure why we would care of a Deuteronomistic Historian would approve of GWB but I guess I’ll write about it. The United States tries its best to separate church and state even though its quite apparent that this isn’t totally practiced. I do not think that the D.H. would approve of GWB because george didn’t run the country based on the laws of the church. I can’t ever really even remember any real instances of george discussing his faith as part of running the country nor did he ever speak of the laws of Moses. Therefore, no the Deuteronomistic Historian would not approve of George W. Bush.

I think that the worst thing that David did was his whole man stunt with Bathsheba. David was supposed to be out with the men fighting in way but for whatever reason was home and spying on women bathing. He sees Bathsheba taking her monthly “i just got off my period so I’m not pregnant” bath and thinks she is hot. He wants her. He finds out from his advisor that Bathsheba is the wife of one of his men fighting in the war. Well he summons her and ends up sleeping with her and gets her knocked up. He calls for her husband to come home and “wash his feet”. However, the husband refuses because they are in a holy war so David freaks because he has to find a way to hide that he got his soldier’s wife knocked up. David ends up setting up the husband to be killed and arranges for him and Bathsheba to be married right after the proper mourning time so that it looks like they just got married, pregnant, and had a kid a little early.

King Solomon built the Jerusalem temple. Outside in the “courtyard” is the bronze sea with 12 bulls where the priests washed their hands before entering the temple. In the first room of the temple there is the “holy place” where 10 lamps burn continuously and tables of bread. In the back of the temple is the Most Holy Place called the Holy of Holies where the Ark of the Covenant and the Cherubim is kept. This first temple was destroyed in 586 BC by the Babylonians. This was a detrimental event for the people. The second temple was built in 516 BC when the exiles started returning.

It is unfortunate that your project didn’t go as planned. I would of loved to watch your youtube videos on nutrition because I need some tips!! However, I can completely understand. I’m glad that you didn’t give up and that you donated your time for something good.
