The comments that people left in regards to my theology project were very encouraging and made me realize that there are others who care about issues that need to be improved within our world. Thank you to: mwallace1, kateyjames, jivory1, leedatboy, nia, jle3, aminias, and missnay1. I realize that this project is something this is necessary because of the growing negativity of our media. We turn to the media for so much that we are even getting ideas about how we should from this source as well. A lot of the people that commented noted that they liked how I had broken the project down into two parts. I did this because I knew I wanted to the presentation, but I also wanted to do something that I could carry out weekly throughout the semester. I think that this is a far jump from the original idea of the website, but I think that it made a make. To answer leedatboy’s question: I came up with the idea because I have always wanted to put on a program about self-esteem young girls as well as start a group and I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to do so. I think that all girls need role models and many of my classmates agreed with this. I appreciate the much good luck, congratulations, and other messages of encouragement. I hope that all the messages that I left for people were just as encouraging and I honestly cannot wait to read some of the final thoughts of my classmates in regards to the projects that they implemented over the course of the semester. I am hoping that everyone can see the effects of my project! THANKS AGAIN!!! Criticism is a key component of life and especially when reading and analyzing a text such as the Bible. There are many different types of criticism that have come about and all in an attempt to clarify the work and well as possible.
The difference between textual and source criticism is simple. Textual criticism is a type of literary criticism that focuses on the identification and the removal transcription errors in the text of manuscripts. Source criticism is as simple as the name. It is taking a source of many kinds and evaluating it. The source may be a document, person, speech, fingerprint, and anything that can be analyzed for data of some sort. In other words it is the study of various from which valuable information could potentially be obtained. It has been referred to as the umbrella term for criticism in general.
Tobit was an Israelite man who was taken captive by the Assyrians and exiled to Nineveh. The book of Tobit is named after him and is set in the eighth century B.C.E. In the story of Tobit he is married to Anna and they are in a wonderful marriage. From the marriage a son named Tobias results. The only thing that is wrong with their life is that Tobias devoutly buries the dead in a respectable way. By doing this he is going against the wishes of the Assyrian king. While in the midst of digging a grave one night Tobit falls asleep. When he awakes he realizes that birds have used the restroom in his eyes and this causes him to go blind. Going from seeing perfectly to being completely blind naturally drives Tobit insane. At the same time Sarah is going through some hard times of her own. Both pray and their prayers are heard and Raphael, the angel of healing, is sent. Tobit wants to kill himself, but remembers that someone owes him money that he wants. He sends his son Tobias to collect the funds. Raphael accompanies Tobit son in the form of a human named, Azarias. Tobias and Raphael travel to Media and stay at the house of Sarah’s family. Tobias and Sarah fall in love and though she has had many husbands that die when they marry her he marries her anyway. Tobias’ dad does not believe the marriage will work so he begins to dig a grave for his son. Tobias survives the wedding night unlike any of the other men and then they return home to Tobit. They rub fish gall bladder in his eyes and he gains sight again. He then gets to see his son and daughter living very happily and passes away as a happy man. The moral of the story is unclear, but we can say that even when things seem completely out of order they work out in the end. Ultimately if we take this approach we will find that most of the times things work out in our favor and it is said that part of this result is because of a solid foundation and faith in the Lord.
Another important topic to discuss is Maccabees and the observation that some people believe he was a heroic person. Why is it that people thought this? Let’s find out! During the rule of Mattathias there was a revolt that was sparked due to do some of his actions. He was old at the time that this revolt got underway therefore it was not surprise that he passed long before the problem was rectified. His son whose name is Judah was then put in charge after his father’s passing. They had given him the nickname Maccabee which meant “hammerer” and therefore the revolt that had sparked was often referred to as the Maccabean Revolt. Judah or Maccabee was said to be a ferocious fighter and had a brilliant mind when it came to strategically military planning. He was known for winning many military battles and more important was able to reclaim Jerusalem. Later on her had the temple cleansed of all pagan material and had it ritually purified. Hanukkah came to be a yearly celebration under his rule. He eventually died in battle. Upon his death one of his brothers took over and the ruling continued within their family for some time. They were thought of to be heroic because of the change that was brought about while they were in power.
