Hello, my name is Melissa DeLoach. I am currently enrolled in Xavier University of Louisiana and I am a Psychology Pre-Med major with minors in both Biology and Chemistry. I am hoping to one day be a doctor and then later on become a philanthropist and potentially put some underprivileged students through school. The purpose of this letter is to bring attention to ever growing concern that needs to me noted. Our country, the United States of America, is most definitely experiencing not only financial difficulty, but also difficulty in societal norms and healthy lifestyles. I have taken notice to the ever growing issue of media exaggeration and how it can certainly have an impact on people that will one day make up our great leaders. I am enrolled in a theology class at my university and we were prompted to think about what we thought were three of the world’s biggest problems. After doing this we were to pick one problem and make a valid attempt at bettering this world issue through implementation of a service project. At I previously mentioned media exaggeration is of growing concern because it has been found to influence the self-esteem levels of many people, most often women. I took this into account and also realized that these same ideas being presented by the media are filtering into the minds of our young people. I decided that implementation a project that dealt with getting young girls to realize their self worth despite what that media or even their friends and family may say.

I have sent this letter to you specifically so that I can not only hear feedback about the issue that I have presented, but also in hopes that you could potentially make this issue an important concern when embarking on various service endeavors. I am well aware that you take a great deal of time to address this issue already and I would like to personally thank you for that. Amongst the students in my theology class we noted that this issue is more serious than people could ever guess. Being a psychology major allows me to be very familiar with the stages of development and there I can say from past research during one’s adolescent years there is a great deal of vulnerability to good and bad information. I have already made small steps in rectifying these issues by starting a weekly girls group at a local New Orleans elementary school and giving a presentation about self-esteem to 7th and 8th grade girls. I am hoping that you can be of great assistance with my endeavors to live up to my school’s mission and “create a more just and human society”. Thank you in advance for your time!

Sincerely,

Melissa DeLoach (A student who has noticed a problem)

I am well aware that you have encouraged our nation to take a renewed approach to service and my hope is that more people can realize that there is an issue with the media and the images that are portrayed. With your help I believe this issue can reach more people all over the nation. I have conducted a service project which included starting a girls group at a New Orleans elementary school as well as putting on a self-esteem presentation. I have done all of this in an attempt to rectify this situation, but I know that it has not made the make that my heart desires to make! Please assist me in my attempt to live up to my university mission and change the world.

Sincerely,

——————————————————****           I chose these four people because they are very influential figures and I believe that they can relay my message to more people than I could ever imagine doing right now! President Obama has the power to reach unimaginable amounts of people. Oprah and Tyra are both media figures who I have noticed play a big part in how people form their opinions about various situations. Finally Pastor McManus is the infamous pastor of City Cathedral and he is a great leader as well!

African American criticism is most simply defined as the analysis of the perspective of Africans during biblical times. Many biblical analyses are told from a Eurocentric mindset and this type of criticism adds more great interpretation of this infamous work. So therefore this form of criticism is another key component of study for bible scholars. Now in regards to God’s house, there is a lot that can be learned from His house. He presents us with images that make us realize that His house is immaculate beyond measure and that we should all have a desire to walk into his house one day. It is to be a place of adoration and great praise. Finally, the idea of the Promised Land is one of great controversy. This controversy is logical because most arguments deal with the fact that the exact location of the Promised Land cannot be identified. Often time it is difficult to grasp the idea of something when there is no physical proof. But at the end it all must be based on faith!
