Week 14: Grade Evaluation

People believe that the end of the world is going to be in their lifetime for many reasons including the media, false information, craziness, and the book of revelation. The media, television, and internet play a huge role in getting an idea about something and broadcasting to an audience to try and persuade them to believe something. Sometimes this information is correct and sometimes it completely is not. For some, the end of the world is coming because of the way things were intepreted in the Bible or the way in which certain calendars from different cultures were interpreted or correlated with modern dates. The book of revelation has also played a huge role in “predicting the end of the world” because it uses vast imagery and phrases that could be interpreted to mean the prediction date of the end of the world. The bottom line is though that the end of the world is not coming by anyone’s prediction. People also like to justify huge catastrophic events by saying that the Bible predicted them as a sign that the end is near. For some this answers the questions of why bad things happen to good people and gives them answers to terrible situations. The end of the world will certainly happen when it happens and when it does we will just all be gone. This should not influence how you live your day to day life whether you know when the end of the world is coming or not.

Based on the analysis below, I believe that I should receive an overall A for this blog business.

The criteria for a grade of A is as follows:

Nearly everyone in the class would agree that your project considerably improved the world.

  • I don’t think it is truly possible for me at this point in my life or really in anyone’s life who is in the same or similar situation that I am in to considerably improve the world. However, my project does promote an organization that is considerably improving the world. Working at the foodbank improved the world by giving them another set of helping hands to be able to feed more people. Even if this helps only one person in need, it is a step in improving the world. I would definitely say that there is no one in the class that would say that working at the foodbank did not make considerable impact on at least one person’s life!

Well written blog entries documented the extensive work that went into this project.

  • My blogs documented all aspects of this project process for me. There really should be no question as to what I did or didn’t do based on the information given in these blogs. The blogs documented the plans of the original projects, to the up and downs I was faced with in the middle, to the final completed project in the end. Therefore, I easily agree that the blogs captured exactly what this point is asking for.

Writing continuously demonstrated a firm understanding of the readings, lectures, and discussion topics.

  • As a person who regularly attended class (I missed a few days but no pertinent information that I could not get from the assigned readings of the day), I really did not have a problem with this part of the writing. I pretty much was always able to answer the questions asked in the blogs from my notes or from what I had read and always gave pretty decent discussion opinions based on these two resources. Based on my responses throughout the blogs there should be no question as to whether I understood what was being asked.

Writing showed the student’s ability to think critically and to clearly communicate.

  • I think that I have always been a decent critical thinker and I think this is demonstrated in the blog entries as even with the hypothetical questions about some of the topics discussed, there was a clear and decent discussion about it. I do not think that there is any question in my ability to communicate the ideas I was trying to get across in each of the blog entries. They were all pretty cut and dry.

Blogged more than the required 1000 words every week.

  • By looking at the word counts on each blog entry, it can easily be see that I blogged more than 1000 words per week every week. I’m not going to lie, some weeks were tough to get 1000 words out, but I did it!

Project and writing fully exemplified Xavier’s mission.Xavier’s mission states that “the ultimate purpose of the university is to contribute to the promotion of a more just and humane society by preparing its students to assume roles of leadership and service in a global society. This preparation takes place in a diverse learning and teaching environment that incorporates all relevant educational means, including research and community service.”

  • I believe that all requirements for completing this course exemplify Xavier’s mission. By me completing all requirements for this course, I too have exemplified this mission as well. Specifically we had to step up to the plate as a leader and come up with a project and then implement this project throughout the semester. This helped to create a more just society by doing something for people that I normally may not have thought about or interacted with this semester. This helped to close the gap between different classes of people in the world as everyone is then working for the same common goal. Furthermore, not only were we required to put our community service project into action but we were to become totally knowledgeable about why we thought this was an issue that needed to be addressed. The stats we had to look up and the stuff we had to know about the organizations we were working with helped to fulfill the idea of research and community service. Because I did all of the above mentioned, I truly believe that my grade should be an A.

I do want to to add that I do not think that you can grade someone on the type of community service they do. This should be more of a pass/fail grade aspect of the course. Either you did some required community service or you didn’t. There shouldn’t be an ABCDF grade on your contribution. The blog writing part could be ABCDF grade though as thats a little more subjective.
