Week 2 Blog

Three problems that I see facing the world today are wars, global warming, and hunger. These are three major problems that will definitely be hard to eliminate. Many will agree that these problems do exist in today society.
Iraq war is definitely taking a major toll out of all the countries that are involved. The other countries definitely are losing more men than we are and their cities are being ruined, but I want to focus about the US side for now. On our side alone, ever since the war had started, US had lost about 4 thousands with over 30 thousand wounded. The war is taking lives of many and leaving love ones heartbroken at home. Also for those that do survive, many are being traumatized by the events that took place on the battlefield. We can just go on Google and search up Iraq war and we will find many articles on it. Most articles are filled with bad news, barely any do you see a happy story. One article I read was about TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). Basically the article said that the number of soldiers diagnose with TBI are increasing each day. This is basically caused by explosions and it can cause the soldier to have brain damage along with decrease in brain functions. The article said that many soldiers are walking away from explosions fine, but later find out that they are suffering for TBI. Basically because the soldier’s face and some area of the spinal cord are exposed, when an explosion goes off, those areas get internal and external injuries. For mild cases, the soldiers regain their brain functions back in couple of weeks. As for those who suffer a more serious case of TBI, their brain functions will never be normal again. Here is a governmental website which have a lot of information about TBI, http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/tbi/tbi.htm. Also where are we getting the money to fuel the war efforts? Aren’t we in a big enough deficit as is? I do not know when it will end, but I hope it is soon for the sake of US and the rest of the world.
Global warming is another major problem. According to the nationalgeographic.com, Artic ices are disappearing fast and many indigenous lives are suffering. Glaciers and mountain snows are also melting. There are more fires, heat waves, and stronger hurricane. Global warming definitely contributed to the strength of Hurricane Katrina. For those that lived in the gulf coast region, we all had experience first hand global warming. If global warming continues, imagine all the major disasters that will come along later on. If we do not do something soon, our planet will be in danger. Many people are not so worry about this problem because they think that the long term effect will not affect them, but they are wrong. We can already see some consequence of global warming. Also, let’s say IF we won’t see any in our lifetime, don’t we want to reduce global warming so it won’t affect our children and those who come after them? There are many things we can do instead of waiting for someone else to do something about it. If you go to http://globalwarming-facts.info/50-tips.html, there is a list that shows some ways in which everyone can help reduce global warming.
As a society, we are very wasteful when it comes to food. Just around me, I know many, including myself, who are guilty of this problem. Hunger is a big problem around the world. As I type this blog, many are dying of hunger. This problem has been around for a while and no matter what, it doesn’t seem to go away. Of course this doesn’t mean we should not do anything about it. This is a big problem, but everyone should do their fair share. I think this is the problem I can do most about. Of course, it is not like I can reach world changing results, but I think I can do enough to help a fair amount of people. Being a board member of Xavier University Asian Association, I believe I can urge our group to participate in more fundraising and community services which help reduce hunger. I will see what I can do for my part and hopefully I will be able to come up with a successful plan for week 3 blog. This might not be a big change in the overall hunger population, but for those that we are able to reach out and help, it would be life changing for them.
Yes I understand the course’s plagiarism policy. It is basically like every other course policy. If we present another person work without citing the source then it is plagiarism. It is one of the many thing that Xavier take very seriously and if you are caught, it will be very hard to clear your name.
Why there is no such thing as the Bible? The answer is real simple. There are way too many religions in this world for there to be one bible. Depending on who you are talking to, the bible can be different. A Christian’s bible is different from a Jew’s or a Muslim’s.
