Week Two: Problems

1401 words by terry pham

There are many problems that face the problem today. So many problems but too few solutions meet everyone’s standard of problem solving. With diverse problems such as abortion, economy, pollution, rising gas prices, a divided nation, or the war in Iraq, many people are starting to believe that there might be no solutions to these difficult questions. As a student, I feel that I don’t have a real say in what is happening in the world. But I know I am not alone in position I take on certain issues. Together, I feel that we might be able to conquer these problems and possibly create a better future for our children and grandchildren. As human beings, we hope to leave the world in a better condition and state than which we arrived. With problems such as pollution and greenhouse effect might hinder our process in achieving this goal.

When you ask the question, “What are the three biggest problems you see facing the world today?” you’re going to get many different answers and responses to these problems. Personally, I feel that what you might perceive as a problem might not be what someone else’s perception of the problem is. This is strictly related to personal incidents and can be bias in some sense. Of course, when you take into account the personal experiences in our daily lives and our lifestyles, we all don’t arrive to the same problem. But having some common ground such as living in the great city of New Orleans, being students, growing adults, or attending Xavier University, we might agree on some problems facing the world. So to anyone reading this, I hope that you will not take offense to the things I am about to state in my blog. This does not affect the way I view anyone if their opinions are different. We’re humans and as humans, we are naturally critical thinking beings.

One of the biggest problems I feel that the world is facing is constant turmoil between nations. If we look at what nations are doing, we are still in an arms race although it is not “official”. President Theodore Roosevelt had a doctrine call the Big Stick Policy that originated in the early 1900s. In certain countries such as Iran, the nation is developing new technology to advance their nuclear program. With the excuse of an alternative for energy, Iran is continuing their research. But most allied powers know this is just a cover up. Having weapons is like being a body builder. Body builders might not want to use their biceps for harm, but it can be used just as a scare tactic. But with their advancement in these types of programs, they’re endangering our safety in the United States of America.

Besides countries such as Iran and the problems with their nuclear program, we still have a huge problem in Iraq. To some people, it’s just the fact that our soldiers are in Iraq. But I think that we are doing a good cause in Iraq. Again, this is my personal opinion. I do have family in the military so I know the effects on the family environment. But the soldiers that are serving in the military are there voluntarily and we should support their decisions in enlisting in the military. Without the allied troops in Iraq, the amount of chaos that could arise would be only a guess. From some of the information that I seen reported by CNN, which is the least bit conservative, many commanders feel that the citizens in Iraq need the presence of the American troops. We have already come so far in trying to control the animosity in the Middle East that we should just complete this mission.

Another big issue I think that the world is facing is hunger. Maybe most of us don’t have to face this kind of problem every day, but this is a diurnal issue for most. Suffering of other people is one of the most terrible things to encounter. We can’t solve the food shortages in third world countries but we can at least contribute a little to help the cause. In disease ridden countries in Africa and Asia, we see people suffering all the time on late night infomercials. We have to have some kind of compassion for these people and feel the urge to better their living conditions. In the United States were a bag of candy would be a snack could be a luxury. When children are no more than just skin and bones, we should all recognize that there is a malnutrition issue in these places of the world.

My last issue is pertaining more to the United States. I know this will cause a lot of controversy by me writing this but I feel that going into the health profession, we should all address this. My last issue is the health care system. I believe that we all as future doctors, dentists, lawyers, nurses, pharmacists, want to do good for the community and help people live a more comfortable and disease free life. But along with accomplishing this goal, we have to put in countless nights and days to get to the title we want in the health field. So along with that, we hope to get some kind of reward besides the feeling of helping someone. But that is not to say that we still need to reform the system. Being a citizen of the United States, it’s a shame of how much we have to pay for health insurance. Is it the cost of medical care? Is it the high salary for doctors and other medical professionals? But this is the cost of good health care. When it comes to one’s health and the health of loved ones, we should not be too frugal. Last night President Obama addressed the United States Congress to outline the new health care plan for American’s. With these new actions by the government, we don’t know where this situation is going to head in the years to come. We can only hope that more citizens will be covered while the level of care and benefits of being a medical professional do not decrease.

But out of all the issues I feel the world is facing today, I feel as if our problem is our reliance on natural energy sources besides the sun. I try not to think of the day when all the world’s natural gas and coal are gone. With civilizations all around the world that now rely heavily on natural gases to power their everyday lives, what would the world do once the last drop of gasoline is burned?

To address the question of why there isn’t a Bible, there are many different answers to that. If asked, what is two plus two, everyone would agree 4. But with the Bible, to a Jewish man, he would answer differently from a man with a Christian faith. So there is no universal or real Bible for everyone to follow.

Once again guys, don’t offend about the things mentioned in this post.
