In my pervious blog, I stated three problems that the world is facing. The three I blogged about were world hunger, pollution, and the downfall of economy. Of the three, I chose to concentrate on world hunger as part of my project for the class. I chose to concentrate on world hunger out the other two because I believe it would the most awarding to help address. My plans to help address this problem will first begin small. I would like to begin by informing the youth group at my local temple of the situation and get them involved in the matter. I would like to encourage them to donate money, food, and/or time. With the food and money collected, I would like to cook food and go to the homeless centers around the city to distribute the food. After getting the temple involved in such matter, I would like to extend it further by incorporating other youth groups in our community.

The alphabets democratize civilization because it allows people to record trades, information, and communicate with each other in a more organized fashion. With the invention of an alphabet, people are able to spread stories through writings. It will allow important events to be recorded and passed around more accurate than having it be passed around through word of mouth. The problem with having stories and events spread around by word of mouth is that it can be easily changed while being passed around. Someone can easily mix up the information and also exaggerate the event. With the creation of an alphabet, the data can just be written down and then can be passed around then to spread the information. Although recording the information does not totally remove the chances of exaggerations and changes, it will be a more uniform way of getting information since everyone would be reading the same thing. Before the invention of an alphabet, people used different methods of keeping records and communicating through writing such as logograph or pictograph. They used symbols and pictures to represent certain things and used them to tell a story of a certain event. We can see how people recorded events before the creation of an alphabet by looking at ancient cave drawings and pottery. The problem with using methods like logograph and pictograph is that the symbols and pictures can be deciphered differently between people. But with the alphabet, people are able to accurately decipher a recorded event since there is a system in which people can now use to record data. The alphabet was invented by using some of the old pictograph symbols to represent a specific sound or utterance. Now people can draw a certain symbol and people will now the sound in which the symbol represents and therefore leads to the ability to more accurately read and write.

Archaeology helps Bible scholars in many ways. It helps Bible scholars to confirm certain events stated in the bible. It also allows scholars to match the events stated in the bible with a more precise time period. By excavating pottery and other remains of ancient civilization, scholars are able to confirm if a certain event took place at that exact place or not. With the help of items found while digging at certain sites, people can analyze the artifacts and the bible to confirm its accuracy. By using a method called, carbon dating, a more accurate date can be given to specific location by analyzing the seeds and pottery found. The artifacts can also lead to surprising discoveries. For an example, in the documentary we watched in class, a figurine believed to be a fertility idol was found which may indicate that the civilization of the area was not monotheistic. So with the help of archaeologist, certain events in the bible can be proven through text, artifacts, and scientific data.

You might think to include educational aspects of world hunger. You could learn about it and teach others, influence politicians, etc.

I really like the idea of targeting hunger in New Orleans. Something that you could do that would have a longer lasting effect is to incorporate it as an event for one of the on-campus clubs.

Your idea is very well thought out and it adresses such a huge problem in this city, as well as the country and the world. I think that you could designate certain members of your youth group to certain food banks and homeless shelters to bring food, serve, and educate recipients about maintaining a healthy lifestyle through food.

I agree that world hunger is a problem that should be addressed. I believe that every effort must be made as soon as possible to deal with this problem. Every second that this issue is not addressed, a life could be lost. In our nation, food is plentiful but it is also wasted daily. People all around the world and a good percentage of people in our country do not have enough to eat because they do not have the money. The journey towards change starts with a single step and I think that getting your temple to help by having a food drive and donating money is a very productive first step towards dealing with this major issue. There are many organizations that help to feed hungry people all around the world. World Vision is an organization that helps by allowing individuals and families to sponsor children and families in need of help. Getting families in your community to join and participate in these organizations may also be another step towards ending world hunger.

I like your enthusiasm but you may want to check if the centers/shelters accept home cooked food. But keep the ideas coming!

You really stress your temple’s involvement. I am a little confused are you going to set up your own program with the use of your church family’s resources outside of the church or are you going to develop the program within your church. I know in my hometown most of the church’s offer the soup kitchens. I think that the program would become a more permanent one if you did it with the help of your church.
