My Project

As I stated in last week’s blog, I feel as though the misuse of Earth’s natural resources is one of the hugest problems that our world faces today.  I think that this problem could feasibly be reversed because the small actions of individuals can accumulate to make a huge change, so the efforts of entire communities could be huge.  I think that every person, in some way or another, has the capacity to be a part of a greater cause.  For this reason, I believe that I can help improve the problem of wasting Earth’s natural resources by having all of the buildings on Xavier’s campus supply recycling bins for both paper and plastic materials.  These could be located next to trash cans so that people can conveniently place all of their recyclable materials in these bins, and the results could be tremendous because college students drink a lot of bottled drinks and use a lot of paper.

Good idea. I can’t believe that this university still doesn’t recycle, at least to the extent that we could. To start I’d contact Ms. Jenestaer Horne at 5064.

This is great Kelly. Maybe you can try to get teachers to do their lessons electronically or via blackboard, more than just handing out papers to each class. This is something I can definetly help you out with, I would love to be a part of this project.

I also agree that this issue is a common misuse on campus. I think recycling this items is a good way to get students involved. You can also use the paper collected to give to teachers so it can be reused. Along with tackling the misuse of natural resources, if you bring the items to a recycling center you can use the money earned to help another issue.

I think the results would be more than tremendous! College students use and waste a lot of paper! I’ve had a hard time locating a place to take plastic in New Orleans so if you know of one please let me know! Awesome plan though!

I think that your project is a great idea. Many of the buildings on Xavier’s campus lack a sufficient amount of recycling bins for paper and plastic waste materials. It seems like there are more garbage cans than anything else. Many students consume products that come in plastic containers and after using them, simply toss them in the garbage. By placing recycling bins next garbage cans, getting students to recycle should be relatively easy as well as effective. You can also try to make flyers or signs that encourage students to recycle. As a result, you will help Xavier to play a role in saving the Earth’s many resources.

True. I can not believe this university does not recycle. We should do more to help our community. We should get together to put clean our university. Once we start at school, we can commute to other places. For example, we can volunteer at a park and etc…

This is a great idea. There are many people that are working on recycling and it may help to work together. The placement of recycling bins of both paper and plastic is a great idea. I noticed myself that there are only recycling bins for paper only around school. You may also want to think about putting them into the study rooms. I know that drinks and food are not allowed in the room but I’m sure many people still being them into the room. I also think it would be a great idea to place the recycling bins near the outside trash cans also. I think a lot of people do not think about recycling such things as paper and plastic but if they were informed about it and begin, it would make a very big difference.

I agree that our natural resources are taken for granted by many; I believe everyone should be more mindful of what they use and how they dispose of it. I think your idea of how to solve the problem is a good idea. To make your project even better, you could maybe go around to some of the surrounding businesses and install bins there as well; this will expand your project and make it even more effective. Seeing your efforts could inspire someone else to set up their own bins and maybe even make it a city-wide program. Also when you do set up the bins make sure they are bright and colorful to catch the eye of the whole XU population.

There isn’t a day that I don’t worry about depleting all of the Earth’s natural resources and killing the Earth. I think that the plan you have for Xavier. This is probably one of the plans that I think would actually work. We can have recycling bins set up around the campus to fix this problem. But we already have some set up, so maybe there is another way to tackle this problem? Just a thought, let us know the progress later.

I agree with you when you say that the sum of small efforts leads to huge changes. I think the problem is that every person assumes that their individual participation in such an effort as recycling would make little to no difference. Each person says, “I don’t have to recycle because they have those environmental freaks that will make an effort to recycle on my behalf.” What they do not realize is that the majority of everyone else is thinking the exact same thing. If every person continues to think this way, they are not only neglecting a very important duty to their planet but they are also neglecting the future of their children and their children’s children. Must our generation be so selfish as to leave future generations to inherit such a great burden? The fact of the matter is that most people are not willing to make the effort to help the environment. This is why I agree with your plan to have recycling bins in every building on Xavier’s campus. By having recycling bins next to trash cans, people do not have to go out of their way to help the environment.

This sounds like it would be a great initiative to jump start a greener Xavier. I think that the incorporating recycle bins on campus will help a great deal in reducing the amount of pollution that is caused by the staff and students on campus. I know that I can almost go through a 24 pack of bottled water a week, so adding recycling bins to the dormitorys might be a good idea too.

  12. VaVa Baird Says:

I really agree with you. I had the same idea for my project as well. I found it amazing that they dont have many bins around campus knowing that paper and plactic is used more than anything here. Even though it is a somewhat small impact, encouraging people to recycle at school could follow them home. And if that happens it would be fantastic. If you would like to work together to maybe do something bigger, e-mail me, as a matter of fact I might e-mail you first to see where you are in your progress. Good Luck!

  13. cdennis1 Says:

I am all for recycling. I see all the waste that students make in the residence halls that could have the potential of being reused. If I am not mistaken there is a group on campus that sponsored dinner in the cafeteria and they said this was one of the issues on their agenda. Also, maybe you can do something in conjunction with GWhizz. I think your project would be great. It goes along with Xavier’s mission of creating a more just and humane society in a way. Often environmental equality is a neglected factor as we so often think about health care but if the environment is the cause it most be focused on too.
