There are many problems that exist in the world today. These problems can be small or grand in scale, meaning that they can have huge and lasting effects or small and minute effects. Whether these problems are big or small, they tend to impact everyone directly or indirectly. Three of the biggest problems that the world faces are hunger, adequate health, and the scarcity of resources. Although these problems represent only a small portion of world problems, they seem to have the biggest and most lasting impacts. Therefore, it is important to address these problems and the overall impacts that result due to the overall existence of these problems.
Hunger is a very big problem that the world is currently facing. Hunger can basically be defined as starvation due to a deficiency in food supply. As a result of this deficiency, the needs of everyone are not satisfied. In defining hunger it is important to evaluate or look at the number of individuals who are currently dealing with the problem of hunger. According to the Bread for the World Institute, about 1.02 billion people are currently starving or experiencing hunger worldwide (“Hunger Facts: International,” 2009). This number alone stands as a testament to the severity of the problem of hunger. While many individuals have an adequate food supply, others have nothing to nourish them. Many of those individuals without an adequate food supply are innocent children. The fact that so many children are affected by hunger adequately displays the severity of the problem of hunger. When children are deprived of the basic necessities of life, something is very wrong. Many people cry about how they have too much to eat, when the most vulnerable and helpless individuals of our planet lack the sufficient amount of food necessary to sustain life. It truly is a harsh reality to recognize and accept. Hunger is a serious problem that doesn’t seem to be leaving the center stage of world issues. Although there are many organizations that are now trying to alleviate as well as eliminate the problem, it still isn’t enough. As one individual goes through the day eating a sufficient number of meals, someone else is starving to death. As a result, more effective action needs to be taken in regards to the issue of hunger. This action would have to include donating money to food organizations, collecting food for the impoverished, and helping to raise awareness.
Like that of the problem of hunger, the lack of adequate health as well as health care is a serious problem that has taken center stage. The issue of health is a big problem that is in existence. Across the globe, people are dying because they do not have access to adequate as well as affordable health care. This is a very alarming realization. While many Americans fight and argue over health care reform, people in other parts of the world can not argue over any health care aspect because these aspects simply do not exist or are completely ignored. As a future pharmacist, I will be assisting patients in obtaining as well as understanding various medicinal therapies. It upsets me to know that so many individuals do not have access to the proper medicinal therapies they need on a daily basis and as a result, lack good or adequate health. It is disappointing to know that innocent men, women, and children are easy prey to a multitude of diseases just because there is a deficiency in health care. Something must be done to help the many individuals impacted on a daily basis by poor health.
Along with the lack of adequate health as well as health care, the scarcity of resources is a big problem. When a substance or entity is deemed “scarce,” that means that there simply isn’t enough of that substance or entity to go around. Some substances or entities would include oil, food, fresh water, and even fresh air. This is quite alarming in the sense that one may think that the resources of the world are infinite, but that’s not the case. Many resources are undergoing depletion just as fast as an individual can blink an eye. This fact alone is scary. What’s also eerie is that many resources are being wasted or just used in inefficient ways. For example, many people use oil in gas guzzling cars when more gas efficient or hybrid technology could be implemented as well as used. Innovative and effective food producing methods are ignored while innocent people starve in some third world countries. Pollution corrupts and contaminates the various bodies of water as well as the air. As a result, clean water and air are limited and causes some individuals to develop unnecessary and unwanted effects as well as ailments. With all of that in mind, more needs to be done to keep the rare and scarce resources that we now have. Whether it be learning new preservation methods or just using plain common sense, something has to be done before it is too late. People need to consider and think about the word “scarce” on a daily basis and should strive to safeguard the resources that are actually left.
Aside from the three biggest problems that I feel that the world is facing today, it is important to talk about why there is no such thing as the Bible. First, it is important to look at the fact that the Bible is a collection of books. Since the Bible is more of an anthology, a collection of pieces or writings by many authors or individuals, it is unfair to look at it as a huge book. It encompasses many stories as well as ideas from many people and is put together as a unified representation of those stories as well as ideas. There is also a second reason why there is no such thing as the Bible. This reason is because the Bible means something different to everyone who has read it and learned from it. Everyone has different interpretations of what they read and the Bible is definitely not an exception to that rule.
