3 Problems Facing the World

There are so many problems facing our world today it is so sad. In this twenty-first century we are dealing with incurable diseases, i.e. AIDS and Cancer, poverty, hunger, natural disasters, wars, racism, and the list goes on. For the blog, I choose to pick as the three biggest problems are poverty, global warming, and war. Here in the city of New Orleans, I hate to see me fellow New Orleanians living under the bridge homeless in such large numbers. It seems as though after hurricane Katrina is when this sudden large burst of homeless people appeared. New Orleans always had poverty but it seems like it is more so now. It all links together because if it wasn’t for global warming hurricane Katrina wouldn’t have been as bad and there possibly would not be as many people without shelter and food. Poverty is nowhere near just an issue here in New Orleans, like other urban cities it is also prevalent. Moreover, I believe that my passion for knowledge about global warming stems from always running from hurricanes my entire life. I can remember as a little girl packing a few changes of clothes, non-perishable food items, and boarding up our home to prepare and evacuate for a hurricane. As I got older, it interested me to know why hurricanes occurred as well as other natural disasters. I then learned that we can prevent such storms as [hurricane] Katrina from being so powerful. By being environmentally conscience can help benefit us in many ways. Not only will we have cleaner air, but we will be healthier, have less and weaker storms, it saves money which in turn will help the economy, and it just feels good! A lot of Americans feels as though “going green“ is a fad, a gimmick, and a waste of time but it is none of those at all. And until we get through the disbelievers, we just really have to keep getting more green products and projects out there. Speaking about the economy, the “war” is definitely contributing in a negative way by dragging down the economy with high gas prices and just physical and emotional effects on the American citizens. On a more global spectrum, war can be worst. For example, look at the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine and also some civil wars in Africa. These conflicts are creating millions of refugees, slaughtering innocent people, and even more poverty. I don’t want to sound like a pageant contestant, but this world really does need world peace.
Of my problems, I think I could do the most about poverty. I would say the environment and going green instead, but seeing those people under the bridge really kicks rocks and getting people to conform to a greener lifestyle would be a heck of a challenge, especially those who don’t really give a hoot. I also believe that helping people in my city have a decent hot meal or being able to fill their kitchen pantries and refrigerators is a much more fulfilling act. I think donating food is something easy yet very helpful and is something people can always use, also something as simple as volunteering at a soup kitchen shows the less fortunate that people really do care and want to help. I don’t know how this can relate to what I want to do as a profession because I am a psych major. Maybe I can analyze the effects of poverty on self-esteem or depression (just making something up). Or maybe I would hold free or reduced priced counseling sessions for people in my community that went through hurricane Katrina and see how they are doing years later or something of that nature. But who knows what the future may hold.
I do understand this course’s plagiarism policy. At Xavier just like many other institutions, it is taken very seriously. It is stated that if you are caught plagiarizing, you will fail the course and not allowed to drop. Then you will have to hear from very important people that can kick you out of school. So, no plagiarizing, it is not worth it! I And if you are not sure if you are quoting something correctly, Xavier offer free help in English and many other subjects, so use it instead of getting in trouble from a mistake, because the very important people will not take ignorance as an excuse. There is no such thing as “The Bible” because there are different versions for different faiths.
