My Letter to the President
Dear Mr. Obama,
While the nation seems to be focusing on matters of health care reform and the H1N1 Flu vaccine, I think an equally significant issue is being over looked and has been for some time now. The issue I am referring too is the nation’s percent of impoverished people and those who go hungry on a daily basis. Knowing that our national budget is in one of the biggest deficits ever, I stop and wonder why the money we do have is not used to actually aid the citizens of this country who actually need it; instead of spending billions on warfare and other departments that I feel should be not be a priority. This, I feel, is in no way helping the actual citizens who are paying taxes to fund these programs. Some of these funds could go to assist starving people who have to live day to day with out proper nourishment as well as those who do not have a place to call home. Some of these people are mere children, who without a stable environment, cannot succeed in their education and make a better future for themselves; continuing the never-ending cycle.
I put it in your hands to truly start the change you have based your administration on. This problem is not small and cannot be solved without the active participation of the government and its key leaders. I challenge you, as well as the entire nation, to band together to really focus on helping our fellow Americans rise above poverty.
My Letter to Senator Bobby Jindal
Dear Mr. Jindal,
I am a student at Xavier University in New Orleans and just by walking not even a mile from my campus you can see the effects of poverty on the local population. As easy as it is for me to find real-life depictions of poverty, I’m sure someone in your position, who is suppose to be focused on the needs of the people, is well aware of the high poverty level, not only in Louisiana, but all over the nation. Although we as Americans seem to be more focused on the health care reform and deciding who to support in the debate, I truly feel we overlook an equally important problem each day; the need to help our fellow Americans who are improvised. There are billons of dollars being spent in areas that could be taken from and spent on helping those who need it the most. These citizens, just like you and I, lack the resources to get food and sometimes even shelter. With your aid as well as help from other public officials and citizens all over, we can help these people one step at a time. I know this problem cannot be fixed over night but it will not get better by just ignoring it and hoping it will go away.
My Letter to Norman c. Francis
Dear Mr. Francis,
As a student at Xavier University, I am given many opportunities to go out into the community and see first-hand the needs of the people around me. I really would like to commend you on making this a mandatory part of the curriculum because so many times we find ourselves forgetting about those less fortunate than ourselves and ignoring the fact that you do not have to travel far to aid your fellow man. During my time here at Xavier and just throughout my life I have witnessed the vast number of people who are living well below the poverty level and do not get the food they need or have a place to live. I am in the process of putting together a food drive on campus to help some needy families during the holiday season and although this is a nice start, it will take so much more to really put a dent in the number of people who the aid they need. This is where you come in. With your aid as well as the aid of the entire Xavier population, I believe we can really get the message out about the need to help those who are struggling and need assistance. By relating this message we can get so many outside people involved and really help a large amount of people and start a trend of people helping others. This can only take place with the help of people like you and those who are really dedicated to the matter. I really hope you will consider it.
My Letter to the Times Picayune
To the Readers,
I’m sure you are aware of one of the biggest problems affecting our world today; you yourself may even be in the predicament. What am I talking about…Poverty. The problem of impoverished people is not just in one area but spread all over the world and is constantly ignored.
