Kristin’s Third Week Project and Alphabet

For my project in this theology class it will consist of me going to local pharmacies and many health stores in the city of New Orleans, seeing if their customer enrollment is high when wanting to purchase weigh loss supplements. In today’s society it is popular to be skinny but at what particular cost. Is having a heart attack, liver damage or even kidney failure among many of the long term affects of wanting to be thin. Will you risk your health for wanting to fit in and to be accepted in your society? Obesity is one of the most leading deaths in America. Over seventy percent of America is overweight. Products like Trim Spa have lead people to take fat reducing supplements to control their fat index. Is this healthy? Well, it is much cheaper to purchase weight loss pills rather than to have a surgical procedure like the gastric bypass surgery which literally involves a surgeon to remove the majority of your stomach to control your food intake. These weight loss pills have become popular in everyone’s eyes now, making everyone aware and educated about their individual fat index whether it be on the television or being advertised on a bill board. I really don’t think that America should be in this particular weight dilemma. I believe that exercise and diet should be a better way and basically an alternative that many people should make and take into consideration when wanting to loose weight. I believe that if a person changes their lifestyle in changing what they eat and exercising they will loose weight naturally and more efficiently. It regards it may take time and a little patience in the fact that everyone wants rapid results but it will be worth it in the long run. Many people have their own remedies and believe in their own ways of doing specific things but I believe that eating healthy and exercising is the best way to go in wanting to loose weight than taking pills that will eventually harm your body in the long run. There are many organic weight loss pills on the market today that will allow and enable a person to loose weight at a fast and rapid paste leaving the customer with excess body fat and feeling that having surgery is the next step in becoming thinner. Many customers don’t recognize the little writing on the bottom of the television screen that the customer will have to also result in excursing along with taking the weight loss pill. Basically, many people who are so anxious don’t read the bottom of the television screen and then become unhappy customers. I have wondered what many pharmacists think about this going on in the many states across America. I wonder especially what the pharmacist in the city of New Orleans is thinking about these weight loss pills. Since I would like to become a pharmacist I want to know what do the pharmacist today think about these weight loss pills and what are their thoughts and views about selling these drugs that will hurt people’s health in the future? I want to understand this and would like to see how they feel about it and if they have any concerns about their customer’s choice in wanting to take these pills. Because popularity and wanting to be thin is in I just believe that people should do it in a healthy manner. It isn’t a crime to be healthy opposed to being deadly poisoned in the future. Why diet pills? Why not exercise or even working out be considered a popular thing? Is America in that much of hurry and that impatient that they need to loose weight as fast as they can and not worry about the long term results as their health is at stake. I believe that America needs to slow down in everything that they do in regards to the fact that because everything runs in a fast paste everyone is basically equip. in wanting everything to be fast and in access to them when they want or either needs it. This has caused havoc in our community and is the result why everyone wants something fast and will do anything to do so to make them happy at any cost, even their health. This is unsafe and needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. There are many websites and even books that have been published warning the American society that taking weight loss pills isn’t a healthy alternative to looking better, because you won’t necessarily feel better.
As far for the lectures that have been discussed in class I have learned a lot about the history of writing. I learned that writing is a very important tool that was used from the prehistoric time to present day and is greatly valued in the sense that if it wasn’t for writings we as humans would have no history of the ancient times and we would not know how to write or even tell of what may have occurred in the past. The major factor of writing came from the alphabet and if it wasn’t for the alphabet we basically wouldn’t know how to pronounce any letters or even words to that matter. The alphabet is a democratization that basically expanded the power of literacy. It makes it very easy for us to write and to communicate with one another in our society. For the alphabet that we have learned there are approxiamately twenty two words that we have learned in order to communicate as opposed to wenty two hundred words in ancient day. The question was asked, why is the alphabet called the alphabet? And the answer came from two words which were alpha and beta. The alphabet was said to be invented by a man byn the name of Cadmus. Cadmus was a Phencian who basically got the inspiration of creating an alphabet from others surrounding him in his present day, he just figured how to make it easier for himself to invent his own language and claim the credit for it. But, in contrary it is believed that the Latins, Greeks, Phenicians, then the Kanadites to have had the knowledge of the alphabet and writing. It is believed historically that a Semitic person in Eygpt around fifteen hundred before Current Era to have inveted the first alphabet. The first and earliest alphabetic inscription was found in Eygpt and is known and the Abecediary in complete order of the alphabet. In Ugarit in fourteen hundred Before Common Era there were thirty characters of the alphabet. They were written on arrowheads to be identified by their own tribesmen when hunting or either fighting in order for them to reclaim their weapons. This took place in tenth century. With this came changes inj Greece and in Israel, by the alphabet altering the culture from oral to written. In lecture we were taught to believe and to understand that writings freezes thought, and that the alphabet gives more classes of society access to these ideas. In Greece from the alphabet they developed philosophy , logic, and skepitism. Israel was the only city to reject the idea of writing and the idea state was sacred and crititized the wealthy who oppressed the poor and the weak. But getting back to the beginning of writing, Cuneiform writing was established and were wedged shaped writing invented by Sumerians in three hundred BC. Also in Mesopatmania Cuneiform was invented and used along with heiroglypics. Pictograph script was then taken into play and considered. Another question came into mind about why did writing originate? Well, writing originated in order to take tokens on their bookkeeping. Then after the writing process was lectured upon the economic system of the ninth century. Land patrimony was an old tribal tradition that allowed family to own land and to be transferred. The second aspect of the matter concerning economics is the royal Cananite system of land grants to the military. I learned a lot in class and basically was quite intrigued by the writing system and how it originated in today’s alphabet. This was a great method that is cherished by many because if it wasn’t for writing we would have no documentations of how life was in the past and we basically would be clueless in everything we have today. I am glad to have a foundation in language and in the alphabet because it has helped me and everyone be able to do things for our own benefit like write and read. These are the two major objectives that structure our government, our communities, our schools, our church, and most of all our own selves. We are able to express ourselves beyond a doubt. This is a major privileged to have this system introduced to us. It is a blessing from God I believe that we are able to communicate in so many languages and in our own specific alphabet. Thank you God.

    Kristin,
This is a great idea. I know someone who took diet pills all throu out highschool and by the time she got the college she had a heart murmur. This was from one of her coaches pressuring her to be thinner. It’s something she still struggles with today. But my advice to you, since I use to work in a pharmacy is to ask the store or assistant manager how ofter they stock the diet pills. Because the ones you mentioned are over-the-counter. They should have a pretty good idea since they do the stocking once a week.

This is an interesting project. I like it very much and i do agree Americans are too stuck on self image. These days people will take whatever means necessary to lose a couple of pounds and it is very sad that the world has come to this. I do believe that if someone has health problems because of their weight that something should be done, but just like you said diet pills may help shed a couple of pounds but at the expense of gaining several other problems.

I think your project is very interesting as well. Many people talk about the problems with obesity, but no one ever takes action to help stop it. I think telling people about the natural way to lose weight will be very beneficial. Everyone who may be obese probably wants to lose weight right then and there, and they commit to unhealthy diet plans, pills, as well as surgeries to achieve it. I think by advocating alternative methods, many people will take notice. Being that I am a pharmacy major, I am really interested in what they have to say about the different diet pills they carry.

I’m glad to see your project progressing. As you know I’ve had experience with classmates of mine telling me of how they abuse diet pills. I’m wondering if you took my advice of asking the store manager to check their records of how often they stock their diet pills. I use to be an assistant store manager for both CVS pharmacy and Walgreens pharmacy and we restocked diet pills as much as we re-stocked milk. It was that often. It’s truely just a lack of education. Many people think that if they can buy the pills over the counter that they can be harmful, but I’m sure that you’ve seen by now that this is no the case.

I think your project is a great idea. Many people dont read the label or choose not to be informed of the risk of taking diet pills. I’ve have a friend that took diet pills and developed chest pains. When i asked her if she knew the risk, she said she didn’t want to. Many people have to deal with obesity. Since it is too hard for them to break their unhealthy eating habits, they decide to go the easy route through diet pills or surgery knowing full well the risks they are taking. I hope you success in informing as many people as you can.
