The problem to resolve that i chose as my project is one that has some acclaimed international interests and therefore involves some extensive research. The problem is the current genocide in Darfur , Sudan which started early 2003. Since then, there has been some disturbing statistics involved. with 400,000 lives claimed since the outbreak in Feb 2003, 500 dying each day, about 1500 dying each month, 2.5 million driven from their homes, 200,000 have also fled into refugee camps since the onset in the neighbouring Chad. According to the spiegel online English site, there is an estimate of over 1million that could die from malnutrition and disease.
The dispute , which in 2004 , the U.S coined a genocide errupted when the Justice and Equality movt and Sudan Liberation Army rebels captured Darfur in 2003. Since then, there has been an incessant destruction of lives, mostly civillian lives by the so called ” janjaweed” whose primary objective includes the destruction opf civillian lives, raping of innocent women, poisoning water supply of entire villages , as well as stoping food supply. The problem persists… Though there was a current peace talk agreement in Abuja Nigeria as at June 8th, whereby the incumbent leader of the rebels, Minnawi signed a peace treaty which most viewed as controversial, owing to the fact that he is now considered a traitor/ However, some, including the European supported offices such as the UN and E.U has ca;;ed him a peace maker.
In my personal project which was completely inspired by these events, I have written several correspondent letters to the incumbent press, seeking a portion of their media space, aither voice, visual or text upon which i intend to highlight, locally the seriousness of this conduct. I look forward to an even more favourable response and i shall keep my fellow classmates updated.
