-Alcohol was very important and played a major part in ancient religion because it killed many detrimental microorganisms such as bacteria. It was said to be safer to drink than water. Beer is imported with many vitamins and proteins, It also warms the liver and sates the heart. According to the Epic of Gilgamesh beer and alcohol is what makes us human; Enkidu ate the food until he was sated, and of the beer he drank seven cups, his soul became free and cheerful, his heart rejoiced and his face glowed, he anointed himself with oil, he became human. In the ancient religion beer was poured and offered to the gods to quench their thirst. an animal sacrifice was known as “beer pouring”.
-Textual Criticism can also be know as lower criticism to distinguish between source criticism that is also known as higher criticism. Lower criticism examines the text itself that record the Bible. Bible scholars start doing their textual criticism of the Hebrew Bible by examining the MT( masoretic text), and then it is compared to other textual witnesses. Source criticism try to learn the original sources of the Bible. Source critics try to decode as much as they can about thes original documents or sources and the authors who wrote them.
-Most people believe that Moses wrote the Torah because it was a tradition that developed during the second temple Judaism, it was a misunderstanding of the word Torah. It is said in Deuteronomy that Moses wrote the Torah and people started to believe it. In the New Testament Jesus spoke of the Laws of Moses and also cited the book of Moses, after that it was engraved in church doctrine that Moses wrote everything. During Jesus’s day people started to question how it was possible for Moses to have wrote everything.
*J- this person is named the Yahwistic source because when he writes about conversations involving God he uses the divine name Yahweh.
*E- this person used to call God Elohim. Many scholars believe that he was a priest who traced back to Moses
*R-he is the redactor of the J and E documents. Many scholars believe that it was shortly after the tragic destruction of the northern kingdom of Israel in 722 BCE that I combined the texts J and E into one composite story
*P- the p is for priest because usually all his material is and relates to priesthood.
*D- the D is for Deuteronomic. Many scholars think that I was compiled over several centuries by priests living in the northern kingdom of Israel before the exile.
*Q- from the German word Quelle which means source.
- The Babylonian Empire destroyed Jerusalem and deported the Judean Aristocracy to Babylonia. Things soon became extremely crazy their were up and they were also down. The Jews return from Babylonian exile and the Jews were under Greek rule. Their was the rise of Alexander The Great who was born the son of the Macedonian King Philip the second. Alexander was great when it came to the military. He conquered the known world by expanding the Persian Empire form Greece to the Indus River Valley in India. The world soon became controlled by one culture.
