As I stated on some on my other blogs that this project would not start happening unless everything started to settle. That doesn’t mean I have totally disregarded my project and left it alone; I’m still working on it. Since some schools are out and others are in session with summer programs, summer school and other activities; I have decided to begin working within Xavier itself. I have seen some of the volunteers that come here everyday and others that reside on campus with children. I’m trying to make contact with how I can get teens to come to the school, since the one that are here already are too small. It’s not that I’m being lazy and don’t want to go out into the community, but like I said I want things to be a little settled at first. The best thing so far is getting this program to the right person and making sure everyone who is interested seeing it succeed and being part of it sign up. Also I think volunteer experience will help me get a sense of how the program might be like, so I’m signing up to volunteer. While volunteering, I’m making trying to make more connections and hoping that it gets to the right person. This program is something that should be done with a lot of patience and requires time and effort. I don’t want to do anything else, but make a difference in someone else’s life. Every good thing takes time, so this program is one of those things. On the other hand there are little things that I have done that are improving the world. One of them involves talking to my younger siblings and their friends who are in that age group. I’ am someone who they look up too and I know if I take the time to talk to them about something they will listen. There is nothing better than a teen actually listening to you and taking in what your saying seriously. The best thing about it is they will pass the information to their friends who will do the same. It will go on, and the ones who don’t believe it will ask questions and will definitely find an answer to their question. Although it doesn’t seem like much, it is a start and can make a difference. This small step will improve the world, by those teens and their friends having knowledge. Knowledge is such a big tool that one can use and with it you can do so many things; one of them can be making the right decisions. Another thing that I have done is by talking to some parents that I’m very close to and asking them to speak with their teens about things like teen pregnancy. I let them know that a lot of teens just want their parents to take interest in their life and if they just take the time to ask how their day was it will make a huge difference. Not only will that build their relationship, but that could be just what the family needed and it will help improve the family. Having more structured families is what the world really needs and it will help improve it. The world needs better people to run it and not allow the economy to go downhill; so with the new generation they will need to come with all their tools. Society is not going to be very accepting to someone who is not well educated and doesn’t have their life together. Many surveys have been done and minorities are at the highest rate for things such as teen pregnancy, STD and other diseases. Some of that are adult’s faults and other leaders who don’t take a chance and talk about that stuff so it won’t happen. I’m not saying that a parent should take their five year old child and talk to them about sex, but if they have a question about answer them in a way that they will know when they get older. Don’t leave them with the mind set that they are allowed to experience, because that’s what children do. Give them the feeling that they are allowed to come to you about anything and that means every little thing. Sometimes a parent might feel annoyed, but after a while they will feel special when that child is growing up and they can talk to their parents about sex and other things that they would go to their friends first. I’m trying to reach out to local families then eventually build my way up and that is going to make the world a better place.
